How to get into top mba

I'm a senior in college and just signed an offer to work in econ consulting (ie Cornerstone/CRA/Bates White). Assuming I work for a few years at that firm and then apply to business school, what else would it take to get into a great mba program? I know the company I'm working at has decent placements at M7 (aside from H/S at least) but not sure what I need beyond work experience.

To maximize your chances of getting into a top MBA program, here’s what you should focus on based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Work Experience:

    • Aim for at least 3-4 years of work experience before applying. This aligns with the average for top MBA programs.
    • Take on leadership roles at work, such as managing projects, mentoring others, or leading teams. Demonstrating career progression (e.g., promotions) is key.
  2. GMAT/GRE Score:

    • A strong GMAT score is critical, especially for M7 schools. Aim for a 720+ to be competitive, though higher is always better.
    • You can take the GMAT multiple times, as schools only consider your highest score.
  3. Extracurricular Activities:

    • Engage in meaningful extracurriculars outside of work. Choose activities you’re passionate about and aim for leadership roles.
    • Admissions committees value candidates who show they can make an impact both professionally and personally.
  4. Clear Post-MBA Goals:

    • Clearly articulate why you need an MBA and how it fits into your career trajectory. Be specific about your short-term and long-term goals.
    • Schools want to see that you’ve thought through how their program will help you achieve your ambitions.
  5. Strong Application Components:

    • Essays: Use your essays to highlight your leadership, accomplishments, and personal qualities. Be authentic and show self-awareness.
    • Recommendations: Secure strong letters of recommendation from people who can speak to your leadership, impact, and potential.
    • Interviews: Prepare thoroughly for interviews to demonstrate your fit with the program and your ability to contribute to the class.
  6. Addressing Weaknesses:

    • If you have any weaknesses in your profile (e.g., GPA), take steps to mitigate them. For example, you could take supplemental coursework to demonstrate academic readiness.
  7. Networking:

    • Build relationships with alumni and current students of your target schools. This can help you better understand the programs and potentially strengthen your application.

By excelling in these areas, you’ll position yourself as a strong candidate for top MBA programs. Good luck!
