How to reneg a merit-based scholarship

Hello monkeys,

I am lucky enough to receive an offer for a US MSc in Management with a $13000 merit-based scholarship. Unfortunately, my financial situation requires me to reneg for a higher scholarship, as I have exhausted lending options and family support.

How do you write an email/letter to reneg this? As it is a merit-based scholarship, I think I should talk about my merits, but I'm not sure what the focus should be.

If you guys could please let me pick your brain for areas I should portray myself in and also ideas that would convince the admission, I would be very grateful.

Many thanks in advance!

Some info about my case for your consideration: - Tuition fee: $51000 - Estimated Cost of Attendance (inc tuition fee): $65000

  • Current scholarship: $13000
  • Can borrow: $32000
  • Desired scholarship: as high as possible to reduce financial burden post-grad

My background: - International (Asian, not Chinese, Indian) - GMAT: 740, Q51, V40 - BSc GPA: 3.2/4; MSc GPA: 3.88/4 (both in biomedical sciences, top 10 UK uni) - Work exp: varied + 1 year: teaching English + 1 year: recruiting, organising and operating at a Thai startup accelerator + 6 months: working at various laboratory jobs + ~3 years: working 50 hrs/week as a waiter in restaurants + ~1 year: volunteering at hospitals & primary school - Career aim post-degree: Consulting at MBB
