Industrial & Operations Engineering vs Computer Science
Hi All,
I’m currently attending michigan ross and am planning on recruiting investment banking / PE. I’m doing a dual degree with a BBA from Ross and a degree from CoE (college of engineering). For finance recruiting, is it better to do an Industrial & Operations Engineering degree or a Computer Science degree? Parents want me to do an engineering degree no matter what, and I’m sure I can handle it, so would just like thoughts on deciding between the two
Thank you so much!
Based on the most helpful WSO content, when it comes to recruiting for investment banking and private equity, both Industrial & Operations Engineering (IOE) and Computer Science (CS) degrees can be valuable, but they bring different strengths to the table. Here's a breakdown to help you decide:
Computer Science Degree:
Industrial & Operations Engineering Degree:
Conclusion: - If your interest leans more towards the technological and innovative aspects of finance, such as fintech or roles that require strong programming skills, a Computer Science degree might be more beneficial. - If you're drawn to the operational, process optimization, and project management aspects of finance, an Industrial & Operations Engineering degree could offer more relevant skills.
Ultimately, both degrees can open doors in investment banking and PE, but your choice should align with your career interests and the specific skill sets you want to develop. Remember, your performance in internships, networking, and understanding of the finance industry often play a more significant role in landing a job in investment banking or PE than your degree alone.
