Is NYU Economics good for IBD

I am an incoming transfer student to NYU’s College of Arts and Sciences, majoring in Economics. I wasn’t able to transfer directly into Stern due to its extremely low acceptance rate for external transfers. However, I plan to apply for an internal transfer if possible, though admission is not guaranteed.

I’m wondering—if I don’t get into Stern, would majoring in Economics put me at a disadvantage in IBD recruiting?

Additionally, I have the option to pursue a BS in Economics and Mathematics in the College of Arts and Sciences if Stern doesn’t accept me. Would this combination help mitigate any disadvantage?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, majoring in Economics at NYU's College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) does not offer the same level of placement into Investment Banking (IBD) as Stern. Stern provides significantly better access to networking opportunities, on-campus recruiting (OCR), and events that are critical for breaking into IBD. CAS Economics students generally do not have the same exposure to these resources, which can put them at a disadvantage.

However, breaking into IBD from CAS Economics is still possible, especially if you leverage strong networking skills, unique experiences, or connections. Some CAS Economics students have successfully landed roles at top firms like JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley, but often through personal connections, standout achievements, or by starting in middle-office roles and working their way up.

Pursuing a BS in Economics and Mathematics could indeed help mitigate the disadvantage. This combination is viewed more favorably for IBD recruiting as it demonstrates strong quantitative skills, which are highly valued in the industry. Additionally, NYU's location in New York City provides ample opportunities for networking and internships, which you should actively pursue to strengthen your profile.

If you are unable to transfer to Stern, focus on building a compelling story for why you chose CAS Economics and how your unique skills and experiences make you a strong candidate for IBD. Networking, internships, and extracurricular activities will be key to overcoming the challenges of not being in Stern.
