Is Phd Finance good for getting a job in industry in the UK
I am living in the UK, I have a Bsc (Hons) Economics (2:1) and am doing an MSc Finance at the minute. I was wondering does a Phd Finance significantly increase your chances of getting a good job in investment banking, Asset Management, trading etc.I dont have any internships etc just my education. I dont have any intention of lecturing at least not until im older. I definitely want to work in industry for at least 10 years. Is a Phd Finance a good choice?
Thanks
No - bad idea
For quantitative asset management (GSAM, AQR, Citadel, etc.) it would be quite useful. But for i-banking, fundamental asset management, or trading it would be a waste of time. There are much more efficient and better paths for the latter roles--MBA.
If you want to reserve your chances of eventually becoming lecturer it wouldn't be bad. You will also get a lot of quantitave skills and would be interesting in that part of the Asset Management. If you are interested in that, great. Otherwise, you might want to consider the years the PhD will take you - you could have been climbing corporate ladder during that time. But doing PhD only for the sake of quantitative skills isn't a good idea either. Even if you don't want to teach at the moment, you must be interested in research and do it yourself. Because that's what you do at PhD's. It's all about what you want.
