Is Santa Clara University a semi-target for SF finance jobs?
A friend of mine recently chose to go to Santa Clara University over Purdue for Finance, and I know both are non-targets, but Purdue is a much more recognizable school. Santa Clara is pretty close to Silicon Valley, so maybe there are VC opps there? I would think that the Stanford and Berkeley kids would get most of the internships. Do you guys have any knowledge about this school?
I go to a west coast school you've probably heard of (UCLA/UCB/USC) and I've never heard of that school literally in my entire life. I'm only one person but I don't think that bodes well
I was thinking the same thing.
SCU and Purdue are both non-targets for front office finance. At either school, any student will have to do basically everything by themselves, so at that point, you might as well choose the one you prefer for other reasons (culture, location, cost, etc.)
I go to a SF target school and I'm from the area, SCU is a solid school if you're looking to stay in the bay and it's decent if you're trying to do consulting/CS because of location but finance is pretty target school driven. Most people I know that go to SCU have ended up in consulting (not MBB) and Big 4, but that's also probably a bit limited as it's based on my experiences. I do think at the end of the day it's how you leverage your experiences but it's pretty tough to compete with Cal/Stanford/other big CA targets for jobs in finance, though not impossible
Definitely accurate, Big 4 and tier 2 consulting firms (accenture, lek, etc.) are very present on campus with not much else in terms of OCR for finance students, at least for big companies anyway. Even though SCU is a good enough school it'll be hard to get FO OCR with Stanford and Berkeley around and limited positions in the Bay. I've seen smart individuals get top finance positions (BB IB, MBB, etc.) but that's mainly through persistent networking and being very capable, rather than OCR.
SCU is a non-target but if you bust your ass you can def get into SF BB. I know some alumni there who are at BAML, Citi, Qatalyst but they def put the grind in
I go to USC and am from Silicon Valley- I personally would disagree with what my fellow trojan/bear/hopefully not bruin. I have always been surprised by SCU representation, particularly for internships. BB in SF is definitely possible imo with some grind, although going to one of the 3 schools above would help greatly imo.. In my experience, SCU has better finance representation per capita than any UC or CSU besides UCLA/berkeley
Where have you seen students of the SCU at?
GS, BAML, WF, Qatalyst, Citi, and Barclays in the Bay.
Spot on, SCU sends like 3-5 kids to IB every year. It's a good school, 50th in USNews, but it's obviously going to be tough to get ocr there when there's more than plenty of Stanford and Berkeley kids that are interested in banking. If you're smart and network for relevant internships prior to junior year you'll have a decent chance at IB.
