Sophomore internships at EB/BB are significantly harder to get than junior. Are you looking to get one for summer 2018 or 2019? Why not just stay as a rising junior, get an internship for 2019, and then graduate with your class in 2020?

I just feel under prepared for the technicals and know they are a little lighter for Sophomore year internship. Also I am a diversity candidate, non target, honors GPA and double major -- I've been able to do some sophomore diversity programs this year but I just worry I'm a little late for next summer recruiting.

That's a valid concern, but it doesn't really take that long to learn technicals. You could easily get solid in two weeks if you worked on them every day, got the guides, etc. Even if you have a job, do it on the weekends or at night. It's not rocket science, and most technical interviews are 30-45 minutes or so, how many questions can they really ask you.

You sound like a strong candidate already. I would stay the course and keep plugging away for 2019 junior positions, the above plan will probably just hurt you. WSO hypes up the recruiting process a little. You are really not that late, many places are just starting their interview process.
