IU Kelley and UW-Madison or CC to Potential Target for Sales and Trade

I'm currently a high school senior interested in sales and trade. I've finished applying to colleges and I have schools like UC Berkeley, UCLA, Claremont Mckenna on my list, but as of right now just considering these two schools, I'm not sure what the right move would be? I would be paying out of state tuition for both IU Kelley and UW-Madison, so cc to potential target would be better financially, but for sales and trade specifically is falling behind a year at this target school gonna hurt my chances of getting a job in that field. I'm not sure if I would be better of doing 4 years at IU Kelley or UW-Madison. Thanks for read.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to consider:

  1. IU Kelley: Kelley has a strong reputation for finance and investment banking, particularly with its IB Workshop, which places around 80 students into investment banking roles annually. While sales and trading (S&T) isn't explicitly highlighted in the context, Kelley's robust finance program and alumni network could still provide opportunities in S&T, especially in Chicago or other major financial hubs.

  2. UW-Madison: UW-Madison has shown improvement in finance placements, with a third of its investment banking club members landing roles at BBs in NYC and others at MMs and boutiques. However, S&T isn't specifically mentioned, so its strength in this area might not be as pronounced as Kelley's.

  3. Community College to Target: Financially, this is the most viable option. However, transferring to a target school like UC Berkeley or UCLA after a year or two could delay your graduation. While this might not significantly hurt your chances in S&T, it could mean missing out on internships or networking opportunities during your first two years, which are critical for landing competitive roles.

Recommendation:

  • If finances are a major concern, starting at a community college and transferring to a target school like UC Berkeley or UCLA is a solid plan. These schools have strong pipelines into S&T roles, and the prestige of a target school can outweigh the slight delay in graduation.
  • If you prefer a more direct path and can manage the out-of-state tuition, IU Kelley would likely be the better choice over UW-Madison for S&T due to its stronger finance program and alumni network.

Ultimately, weigh the financial burden against the potential career benefits and your personal preferences for campus life and opportunities.

Not sure about S&T, but here are a few stats:

Kelly has a larger IB program, placing >100 kids per year, while UW places ~40. Not sure about S&T but likely similar. However, consider that Kelly has ~2,000 business students per class while UW has ~700, so there’s way more competition at Kelly. If you get direct admit at IU that’s great, but if you don’t, you aren’t getting into Kelly. At UW, plenty of pre-business kids get into the Bschool (and they’re fine for IB).

Both Kelly’s IBW and UW’s IBC take +/-20% of applicants, and UW has an S&T group with a slightly better acceptance rate, but is also relatively new. You can definitely land S&T at great banks from both schools, so you get to choose your type of hard.

Thank you for your response, I currently am on the waitlist for Kelley. I was thinking it would pretty easy to get into Kelley even if I don't get direct admit, but your suggesting otherwise. Thats definitely something to consider. I am waiting on UW-Madison still and tbh I think for me if I decide to pick between these two schools, its probably going to come down to if I'm directly in their business school and which school gives me the most money. Overall tho, do you think CC is worth it over these schools for a shot at a target like Columbia, Cornell, NYU, etc?

Very tough to transfer to a target after freshman year and virtually impossible to transfer after sophomore year, unless you’re willing to take 3-4 more years at those schools. You absolutely need to be at the school you want for a sophomore year to get the junior internship.
