UW Madison or UF
Im incredibly stuck and just wanted some advice on which school places more. I got quoted at 31 a year out of Wisconsin (just through IBC); the number out of UF is less clear to me. I was also curious as to which would be more challenging course wise. Any advice helps.
UF places pretty well if you are in the MSF program: https://warrington.ufl.edu/master-of-science-in-finance/careers/
A handful of non MSF undergrads also get placed each year.
Likely a similar experience at both schools recruiting wise with NYC being difficult but regionally strong (UW/Chicago, UF/Southeast) Would wherever you think you’d be more comfortable and thus able to create a nice resume. Both awesome schools
Current UW student here. I've absolutely loved my time here. I'm sure a UF student/alum could say the same about their school, but this truly is one of the most fun places to be as an undergraduate student. The experience is unmatched, and I couldn't recommend coming here more.
There are some very worthwhile classes in the business school (Fin 420, an investment banking course taught by a former Telecom Lehman associate). However, like many business schools, there are also some bullshit requirements that you'll have to take.
I've successfully navigated the recruiting process here, and if you're planning on coming here and recruiting for IB, you need to get into IBC. There are a few kids not in the club that place every year, but banks far more often than not have recruited within the IBC network.
I wouldn't say that UW is regionally strong (mentioned in a comment above) for any reason other than many kids from Wisconsin/Illinois and want to go back home to Milwaukee or Chicago. We send plenty to NYC every year, and it's been exciting to watch our placements improve since arriving on campus. About a third of the club places at BBs in NYC each year, with others going to MMs (Baird, BMO, William Blair, Houlihan) and boutiques (a few place each year at EBs). An MD at Roth started IBC when he was at UW, so we've sent plenty of UW students there in recent years. IB recruiting is by no means easy here (consulting is even more difficult), but I've found the alumni network incredibly supportive and willing to go to bat for you. It's so exciting to see how much the club's placements have improved in the past few years. When I first got here, JPM wouldn't give anyone an interview, and now we're sending 3 to JPM NYC next summer. I'm not sure what it's like at other schools, particularly target schools, but the community of students that go through recruiting each year is tight-knit and supportive.
I hope this helps!

Current UW-Madison junior here. The above comment pretty much nails it. If you want IB, IBC is a must. If you google UW-M IBC you'll find all your questions about it answered. Also wouldn't be weird to 'network' it as in find members on LinkedIn and ask them for a phone call (would probably be very happy to take your call). I assume you are a direct admit to the business school so in that case try to join ASAP to leverage the brand name for networking. Don't buy into the #31 Poets & Quants rank, we dropped 10 places in one year which seems ridiculous/impossible for any school to do. P&Q is for pussies imo. As said above, the alumni support network is insanely supportive and you if you're an aggressive networker and get a solid GPA you can can place anywhere you want in Chicago if that's your thing.
Most fin classes are A-able if you put up two hard nights before the exams. Consulting recruiting is hard but getting better. Lowkey the best way to do consulting from Madison is the Industrial Engineering track and Wisconsin Consulting Club (not as much going on as IBC tho). If you're interested in RE (which you should be) Wisconsin is a no-brainer. Again, good networking and GPA you can work at literally anywhere in real estate. The new MSRE is going to be kickass. Tons of kids work at all the top CRE capital markets teams all over the country and even a fair amount of PE RE teams.
In terms of a fraternity, if you want to maximize you're life and network, it's a no-brainer. Greek life runs the school, just make sure to join a big one. Most frats have 20+ finance kids with lots interested in IB, ST, AM, RE. Wisconsin was my safety but I by far have had the most fulfilling experience here than any of my friends. Anybody on the fence... it's a no-brainer.
Current UW student, can I PM you about IBC?
Absolutely
Go to uf and not in msf or any of the big clubs but still got an SA at a top MM. some of the classes are tough but most aren't bad. There are many tough classes if you want to challenge yourself. I didn't and am having a blast. Also didn’t know I wanted to do IB until last summer so if you know before you go to college you’ll be fine.
How bad was business finance?
Not bad would grind for like 3-4 days before the exam and got an A. Just spent like 10 hrs in the library each day. Didn't look at any material before. The 4 accountings were harder for me (if your finance major). Got an A in 2 and a B in 2
If your running back going for 250 every year against Nebraska, a shitty program that thinks it's still relevant because noted woman-respecter Lawerence Phillips carried them to some good years in the 90s, Wisconsin is a top target.
