Largest NE Drug Rehab To Be Built Next to Penn's Campus -- Prospective Students, Do Not Attend

https://www.thedp.com/article/2024/07/penn-rehab-…

Absolutely insane: 40 story drug rehab center ("Largest addiction rehabilitation center in the Northeast" my god) is being built a few short blocks away from Penn's campus and right behind Mason and The Chestnut where a lot of Penn undergrads/grads live off-campus.

Penn is already dealing with enough issues with safety and homelessness already, this is just going to make the situation so much worse. The project is estimated to be completed by the end of 2026 according to article.

Some "calming" words from the shady developer:

“Yes, it might be a little scary sometimes on the street to see these guys roaming around,” Smeke said. “Even though it's going to look a little awkward to have a rehab drug facility right next to a dormitory or your classroom, this is something that in the long term will fix bigger problems than [the time that] you've been there.”

Mind you this developer / mgmt team got The Mason shut down by the city FOR EIGHT DAYS back in June due to a massive pipe flood; also slapped with multiple code violations due to lack of power / running water throughout the building. Are these really the kind of people to build and manage a massive drug rehab facility, and so close to a college campus?! It's actually insane on multiple fronts that this kind of project is even allowed

TL;DR: If you were considering Wharton/Penn for b-school / undergrad in the near future, please look at other options and DO NOT ATTEND. If you are Class of 2027+, do yourself a favor and prep your transfer apps now. Developer + Penn's admin/mgmt are extremely incompetent, there's no way that Penn's campus won't become Kensington 2.0 once this project is finished. Truly just a shitshow waiting to happen
