LBS GMiM - same as regular MiM?

Hi all, i've found that there is a lack of recent information on this site pertaining to how LBS' Global Master's in Management (GMiM) shapes up in terms of recruiting and overall reputation in London and abroad, particularly in comparison to LBS' flagship MiM & other London target masters programs.

Through some initial research, it would appear that a large majority of students in the GMiM are Chinese international students who eventually end up in IB/MBB in China/HK post grad, which is unsurprising when considering the nature of the program (2nd year of study in China).

However, as someone who does not fit this profile nor language skillset (UK uni, non-Chinese) i'm curious if the GMiM stacks up with both the regular MiM at LBS and other UK targets the same for London recruiting. I would not be opposed to working in HK etc. but i'm aware of the severe limitations due to language and frankly London is very much still my focus, which leads me to a few questions:

1. How does LBS' GMiM fare/how is it viewed against the regular MiM for London IB/MBB recruiting? Is the lack of alumni I can find on LinkedIn working in high finance a product of self selection (returning to China)?

2. I have multiple no-name IB/PE internships and want to break into IB/PE (or an adjacent industry) post graduation - does the GMiM limit me to just consulting (wouldn't be opposed but not first choice)? How does it generally compare to the MFA/other Msc targets in this regard?

3. If anyone has been through this program or has insight as to how it is, would you recommend it? (note: I have been to China several times and enjoyed it and my long term gf is Chinese, so i've at least felt comfortable there as a tourist - surely would be similar as a student?)

I feel that this program is a unique opportunity for someone looking to enjoy an extra year abroad while also landing a top London job, so I would appreciate any colour, thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding the LBS Global Master's in Management (GMiM) compared to the regular MiM and other UK target master's programs:

1. LBS GMiM vs. Regular MiM for London IB/MBB Recruiting

  • Reputation and Placement: The LBS MiM has a strong reputation and places very well in London, particularly in consulting and finance sectors. The GMiM, while also reputable, tends to attract a significant number of Chinese international students who often return to China or Hong Kong for work. This could be a factor in the fewer alumni seen in high finance roles in London.
  • Self-Selection: The lack of alumni in London high finance roles might indeed be due to self-selection, with many GMiM graduates opting to return to China/HK where they have stronger language skills and networks.

2. Career Prospects Post-GMiM

  • Industry Focus: The GMiM does not necessarily limit you to consulting. While consulting is a common path, the program's structure and the LBS brand can still open doors in IB/PE. However, the regular MiM might have a slight edge in London due to its more direct focus on the UK market.
  • Comparison to MFA/Other MSc Programs: The LBS MFA is highly regarded and considered one of the strongest options for finance careers, though it is also more competitive. The GMiM, while valuable, might not have the same level of focus on finance as the MFA or other specialized MSc programs.

3. Personal Fit and Recommendations

  • Program Experience: If you have enjoyed your time in China and feel comfortable there, the GMiM could be a unique and enriching experience. It offers the opportunity to gain international exposure and potentially leverage the LBS network in both London and China.
  • Recommendation: If your primary goal is to secure a top job in London, the regular MiM might be a safer bet due to its stronger local focus. However, if you are open to working in China/HK and value the international experience, the GMiM could be a great fit.

Additional Considerations

  • Internships and Work Experience: Your existing internships in IB/PE will be valuable regardless of the program you choose. Highlighting this experience during your applications and interviews will be crucial.
  • Language Skills: While not a deal-breaker, language skills can be a significant advantage if you consider working in China/HK. If London remains your primary focus, this is less of a concern.

In summary, both the LBS GMiM and regular MiM are strong programs with their own unique advantages. Your decision should be based on your career goals, comfort with international experiences, and the specific industry you aim to enter.

1. No difference at all except the fact that you'll learn some Chinese and have some more international exposure (for the first year you are completely integrated in all ways with the Mim, the only difference is that you have chinese lessons). Lack of alumni is due to a very high proportion of non-Chinese Gmims dropping out after their first year (and so just doing a Mim), the Chinese ones largely going to work back home, and the class size simply being small compared to the Mim.

2. No, the Gmim/Mim do not limit you to consulting, although this is what most people (abt 50%) end up doing because that's their goal. People whose target is IB/PE/finance in the Mim recruit towards that without any problems, although the proportion is ofc lower that the Mfa since IB/PE/finance is the main focus in that programme.

3. Can't comment on this much except what I said above that a lot of non-Chinese Gmims drop out (due to just wanting to start work already and also due to the Gmim making you ineligible for the grad visa). Also you're right that the majority of people doing the Gmim are Chinese int'l students.
