MBA IB/PE Thread

Hi Fellows,

First want to say thanks for everyone in this forum who helped me get into the IB industry in college time. Your advices were incredibly valuable.

My Background: A top US undergraduate business school (not Wharton) / went to one of the top US BB IBD in HK after college, covering APAC TMT and now Associate 1 / No US green card (sponsorship needed)

As I really miss the life in States and the exit opps are not ideal in HK, I applied to MBA this year and got admitted to one of H/S/W in Round 1. Have a few questions on MBA career path as below. Much appreciate any thought here

  1. How likely to get into PE/HF/LO directly (through Summer Internship or Fulltime Hire)
  2. How likely to get into Tech PM Industry directly (through Summer Internship or Fulltime Hire)
  3. What's the comp / hours like for IB MBA asso and how's the MBA asso exit opps like

Happy to answer any questions regarding HK IB / MBA application / life in Asia as well.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are insights into your questions:

  1. Getting into PE/HF/LO directly (through Summer Internship or Full-time Hire):

    • Breaking into PE post-MBA is highly competitive, especially at top funds. The process often revolves around networking and demonstrating a strong understanding of the PE landscape. Many candidates with pre-MBA PE experience or IB backgrounds have an edge. For hedge funds (HF) and long-only (LO) asset managers, the transition is possible but less common directly from an MBA unless you have a strong investing background or prior experience in public markets. Networking and showcasing your passion for investing are critical.
  2. Getting into Tech PM Industry directly (through Summer Internship or Full-time Hire):

    • Transitioning into a Tech Product Manager (PM) role post-MBA is feasible, especially from H/S/W. Many tech firms actively recruit MBAs for PM roles, and your background in IB could be leveraged to highlight your analytical and strategic skills. However, you may need to demonstrate a strong interest in tech and product management through coursework, internships, or side projects during your MBA.
  3. Compensation/Hours for IB MBA Associates and Exit Opportunities:

    • MBA Associates in IB typically earn total compensation in the range of $250K-$400K, depending on the bank and location. Hours can still be demanding, often ranging from 60-80 hours per week, though slightly better than analyst roles. Exit opportunities for MBA Associates include moving to PE, corporate development, or strategy roles, but the window for PE exits narrows as you progress in your IB career. Many associates also consider staying on the partner track within IB.

If you’re targeting PE or HF, focus on networking early in your MBA program and consider summer internships as a critical stepping stone. For tech PM roles, leverage your MBA program’s resources, such as tech-focused clubs and alumni networks, to build connections in the industry.
