Mcgill to break into invesment banking?
Hi, I'm a cegep (18) student who's trying to get into McGill and then the Honours Investment program? Worth it? I've seen a lot say that Ivey is THE target school but also lately also heard that if you get into the HIM that you're practically set to break in to BB (many alumnis lately are always in jp, goldman, big 5)
Getting into HIM is not easy. If you get into McGill and Ivey, I would pick Ivey.
There's isn't much of a difference in recruitment opportunities between McGill and Ivey, Ivey has a handful of buy-side firms posting on OCR that McGill doesn't have, but as far as banking goes, it's the exact same. So if you are Quebec based, it's really not worth it to pay out-of-province tuition as Ivey will be $50K more. Also note that if you are coming out of CEGEP, everyone at Ivey will have started a year earlier which doesn't make for an easy time meeting people ands stuff and it can be a pain to get full credit for your 2nd year at CEGEP.
As the poster above mentioned though, getting into HIM is very competitive.
Thanks, I'm actually interested only in banking for now (buy side after some experience as an analyst is the plan). Also, I've heard Ivey has a great and thorough program but do you think HIM is better overall? They only have like 12 people in the program but as far as I know, they all place at places like GS, JP, etc.
It's tough to say one program is better. They both are really good programs. In the end what really matters is your GPA/networking/extracurriculars. If you have a really good GPA, you can get into GS, JP, etc from McGill or Ivey.
You can make it happen from either. Given the huge tuition difference for you and the fact Montreal is f**kin awesome, I would definitely take McGill. Also, if you decide during your studies that you don't want to do finance (blasphemy, i know), McGill has a stronger name overall
HIM has a 100% placement this year. Placing from NYC to London to Hong Kong. From some of the top EB and BBs and our reputation is only increasing.
