Medical Student looking to get an MBA - do I have a chance at H/S/W

So, I'm currently a medical student at a top 20 medical school and am thinking about getting an MBA. My primary goal is to eventually go into hospital management or healthcare consulting.

Background: 24 yo male STEM major @ Ivy undergrad, 3.5 GPA 95th percentile MCAT

I have a couple questions: 1. My home institution's MBA program is not as strong, so I would be looking to apply externally. What are my chances at H/S/W? How about M7 schools in general? If I get a 750+ GMAT, would I be able to mitigate my relatively low GPA?

  1. Are my chances best to apply to b-school during medical school or during residency? I have heard that work experience is fairly important, but at the same time it seems like age is pretty important too. If I apply during or after residency, I would have some work experience, but I would be 30-32 years old. Would it be better to wait until after residency to apply to b-school, or should I apply during medical school?

I guess I should have clarified - I do have a full scholarship at my medical school, so that's why I wouldn't be incurring (relatively) too much debt. I have been considering dropping out of medical school to just pursue business school instead, but I feel like I'm just wasting my scholarship altogether.

If your goal is consulting you can apply for those positions during med school and don't need an MBA.

Firms like MBB have dedicated recruiting processes for MDs.

If you went to an Ivy League undergrad then you should have a lot of alumni in the consulting scene. I’d start reaching out to them and if you’re able to make some connections then get additional information on how their firms approach recruiting MDs.

If you go through med school then you should be able to get a position without needing the mba. If you drop out of med school for an mba then I’d assume you more or less are going to lose a lot of the credit you gained for your time in med school.

Also, a 3.5 in stem is pretty high, no?
