Need advice for a leave of absence from school.
Hello all, I need some professional/life advice!
For some context I am a current sophomore who is interested in breaking into IB like every other monkey on this website. I go to a really small non-target liberal arts college in the south on a full ride merit scholarship which I know doesn't really give me the best odds on breaking into the industry. However, in my 1.5 years here I have already completed a summer internship with the Federal Reserve and I am currently working as a fall IB intern at a local LMM boutique. Hopefully this upcoming summer I will be able to intern at a LMM PE firm in a big city near me but I am still ironing the details out on that internship.
As for my dilemma, I will be taking the spring semester off of school. My grandfather, who I am very close with, has become very sick and has no one to take care of him (besides my grandmother who is also very old). I am ahead on college credits and if I were to look back at this moment 10 years from now I would very much regret not spending time with him/taking care of him before he inevitably passes away. I would be staying in my hometown with my parents (they both work full-time and can't leave work). What should I do? Here are my possible paths:
Path 1: Take a leave of absence next semester, graduate on time May 2027 and miss the junior year cycle of IB recruiting and try for full-time roles later
Path 2: LOA next semester, transfer to a better state school in the fall for equivalent tuition and delay graduation by a semester to re-recruit as a sophomore next year
I have already committed to dropping this next semester. Should I still recruit in the spring even though I won't be in college and possibly transfering to another university? I know in my freetime I will be studying technicals/continuing to network but what are some other things I could do to maximize my time away from campus? I am thinking about getting a random part-time job to get some extra money before school starts. I am also open/leaning towards doing some volunteer work (local non profit/volunteer firefighter/something with the sheriffs departments etc). In yall's life opinion if yall had this situation what would yall do and what can I do to get my professional life back on track?
I know this is quite a lengthy post but I am at a crossroads and any advice would be beneficial. Thanks a lot!
