NYU CaS for IB opportunities?
I've recently been admitted into NYU CaS but not Stern. I want to go into finance/IB after undergrad and have heard recruiters heavily prefer Stern grads over CaS grads. I could try internally transferring into Stern but from what I've heard that's near impossible and even Stern students have a hard time competing for IB jobs let alone non-Stern. Of course, NYU is still NYU and NYC and still NYC with all its finance opportunities.
How true is all of this? Please be blunt, I don't want rare success stories but the realistic truth.
My alternative is saving around 20k and going to my state school of Rutgers which has a decently ranked but still non-target business school. What should I do? Thank you in advance for your advice and help.
If the cost difference is only 20k, then you should definitely pick NYU CAS over Rutgers. As for recruiting opportunities, yes, Stern gets targeted much more heavily than CAS, but every year a few CAS students find their way into BB/EB IBD. Definitely not as easy as if you were in Stern, and you’ll have to hustle a fair amount to make up for that disadvantage, but doable.
internal transfer is not as hard as u think. Get a decent GPA (3.9+) in freshman fall and you have a good chance of being admitted.
Since when did decent GPA mean 3.9+?

friend transferred out of CAS to Stern. loaded up on Stern classes in addition to CAS classes during the j term and summer to demonstrate strong interest
From my experience when I was at NYU (Stern) several years ago, CAS Econ / Math / CS / Philosophy / etc. students who wanted a front office finance job (IB / S&T / ER) who put in the work through networking, being up to speed on technicals / finance knowledge, displayed their interest (through internships or club involvement) did well very well recruiting and ended up in positions they wanted. Now I'm not sure how recruiting has changed over the last 1-2 years that would change this but assuming it hasn't changed the dynamics too much you should be well positioned coming out of NYU CAS to get what you want even if you don't transfer to into Stern.
For reference, when I graduated there were many NYU CAS students who snagged strong BB and MM IB / S&T / and ER positions several even at the top groups. NYU is one of the most heavily targeted schools for finance recruiting so breaking in from NYU CAS is certainly possible and commonplace from what I've seen.
I'm from NYU CAS, got into Cantor, got cancelled lol, but our class placed at least 5 kids into FO positions across the street in reputable firms.
That sounds ridiculously low unless something materially changed in recruiting in recent years. I could think of ~15-20+ from NYU CAS (across ER / S&T / Capital Markets / IB / HF / PE, etc.) in my year when I was there and that was just people I knew of.
I'm sure there was more as NYU as a big school.
