NYU Gallatin of Individual Study - Good Enough for IB?
We all know the stereotypes of Gallatin Students:
Alt kids studying “Intersectional Latinx Dance” or the “Interpretive female body” while their dad who works as a Senior Director at Northrupp-Grumman builds Hunter Killer missiles for the DoD for 500k+.
I have no personal objections, I was an idealist once upon a time. I only ask if I were to hypothetically transfer into Gallatin, a school in NYU that is much less competitive than CAS or Stern, would I get laughed out of the room during my first round of interviews in front of an MD.
My “custom major” will obviously be finance related, it’s more of an easy backdoor to NYU to take Stern and CAS Econ classes and make the same connections and recruit for the same clubs.
Would love some insight on this crazy plan, thanks for anyone that responds ❤️
Based on the most helpful WSO content, transferring into NYU Gallatin and crafting a finance-related custom major could work, but it comes with challenges. Here's what you need to know:
Gallatin's Reputation vs. Stern/CAS:
Gallatin is not traditionally associated with finance or investment banking, and its reputation is not on par with Stern or even CAS for IB recruiting. However, the flexibility of Gallatin allows you to take Stern and CAS Econ classes, which could help you build a finance-focused profile.
Recruiting Challenges:
While you can access Stern and CAS resources, recruiters may still view Gallatin as less competitive. You’ll need a strong narrative to explain why you chose Gallatin and how your custom major aligns with your finance goals. A convincing story is crucial to avoid being dismissed during interviews.
Networking and Clubs:
Leveraging NYU’s location and networking opportunities is key. Joining finance-related clubs, attending Stern events, and building connections with alumni can help bridge the gap. Gallatin students can access these resources, but you’ll need to be proactive.
Custom Major Strategy:
Your custom major must clearly demonstrate a focus on finance. Incorporate quantitative and analytical coursework from Stern and CAS to show recruiters you have the technical skills needed for IB roles.
Realistic Expectations:
Breaking into IB from Gallatin is possible but more challenging compared to Stern. You’ll need to outperform peers in networking, internships, and academics to stand out. Having a strong GPA and relevant internships will be critical.
In summary, while Gallatin is not the ideal path for IB, your plan could work if executed strategically. Focus on building a finance-heavy academic profile, leveraging NYU’s resources, and crafting a compelling story for interviews.
