Penn transfer student questions

Hi, I have a couple questions directed at people that have successfully transferred into Wharton after their freshman year in college at another university.

I have been doing my homework and have come across a couple of things that I'm unsure about. Penn's website states that applicants should be proficient in another language at the time of application. Does this mean that I should be taking foreign language classes at my current school, or can I learn a language on Rosetta Stone and state on my application that I'm proficient in it? It seems a little strange to me that a foreign language is important to admissions there, but I understand that they are looking for well-rounded students.

My other question is: does Calculus for Business Students at my current university likely fulfill the requirement for a calculus class that is equivalent to their calculus 1 class, or do I have to take Calculus 1 at my school?

Thanks for any input on these two topics.

Penn7690:
FYI, the material covered in our Calc. I course is similar to content in Calc 2 at most universities.

yup. so business calc is probably not going to cut it. take a look at your syllabus and see if it covers the same material as the syllabus for calc at wharton.

Sometimes lies are more dependable than the truth.

Basically I'm wondering whether that recommendation is an important component of my application. If so, I would start learning a language this summer and probably take a language class during my freshman year.

I'd recommend looking/asking on CollegeConfidential for admissions-related questions, even if the people there can be quite juvenile.

I transferred into Wharton from another university, but I would not get your hopes up. I know of someone from Dartmouth with a 4.0 their first semester who applied for transfer and was not accepted. I don't know of any exact data on Penn transfer admissions broken up into CAS, Wharton, etc, but around ~20 people are accepted into Wharton.

I'm not sure about the language. I took a language in HS and had AP credit.

Personally I think that "business calc" sounds less impressive than taking the regular class. So I would go with Calc I. And as you say that will be much better for transferring to an econ program, where the business course likely won't satisfy the major requirements.

Trust me, I'm certainly not assuming that it will be easy to get in. It's a school that I'm going to apply to, and I'm confident that I will be competitive. From what I've learned, you need a little bit of luck as well, so fingers crossed and I'll see what happens. Thanks for your input. I'll consider asking CC as well.
