Philadelphia Area MBA

Looking for some advice on Philly area schools and a finance MBA. I studied finance at an area private Catholic college ('10) and currently living in Center City interested in an MBA program.

Can anyone offer advice when it comes to a part-time MBA from either Villanova, Temple-Fox, St. Joe's, PSU, or Drexel? I'm currently studying for the GMAT but I don't have an idea of what a prelim score would be.

Thanks,

NO PLEASE NO!

Get some work experience, do not go to these steal your money MBAs. Then study hard for the GMAT and go to a top MBA program that will be worth the cost to attend.

The answer to your question is 1) network 2) get involved 3) beef up your resume 4) repeat -happypantsmcgee WSO is not your personal search function.

Second this. No please no.

I'm tempted to say that NO part-time MBA in Philly is worth the time and money they charge... including Wharton. This is probably arguable. But it's my personal theory.

I see the product rolling out of these programs. It is largely dismal, and this is unsurprising. You talk to these people during recruiting season, they're like: "Oh wow, real employers recruit here! Sometimes. And some of them are even Fortune 500 firms. And some real Wall Street firms like Mastercard and Ameriprise." Yep. Too bad there are 300 applicants from your school alone for each of those jobs.

Talk to someone at a top traditional MBA program and chances are, they wouldn't go to the Ameriprise EIS even just to raid the pizza and troll the presenters. (Although, in truth, the crappier the company, the nicer and more expensive the recruiting dinners seem to be.)

If you really need to stay in Philly, go kick some GMAT ass and get admitted to Wharton's full time traditional MBA program. I know the GMATs are hard... but Wharton seems to really love/prioritize high scores in their admissions process. I don't know how much money you make right now, but I'd guess that busting ass on the GMAT will maximize your NPV.

Bankerella, I am so jacked you would hate it haha

OP, what did you do during your few years of experience again?

I do have 2 years of work experience and 2 internships from when I was in school. I'm kind of tied to this city so a Stanford, HSB, even NYU are kind of off the table.

Stop being a pussy and live a little. Get out of Philly for b school. But if you absolutely will not leave because you just cannot get enough of the food trucks and brotherly love, Wharton should be your #1 and Nova your #2

Agree 100%, if you are going to invest in yourself and your career then have some geographic flexibility

Here's the thing with Wharton. I'd need another 4-5 years of work experience, and that's kind of a long time to wait on the chance that I don't get in.

41215, look into MSF programs too if you don't have much experience. I know Villanova and Temple both have them.

broheim,

you do NOT need 4-5 more years of experience for Wharton!! you already have 2, and 4-5 more years will put you at the 6-7 years out of college time frame, which puts you on the high end of the 25-28 sweet spot for MBA admission. if you want an MBA and not anything else, do well on the GMAT and start thinking of applying in 1-2 year time frame. i met a chick who graduated in '09 and will be starting there in the fall. crazy young 'uns these days......

don't do a part-time MBA. get into Wharton FT if you can. if you can't skip the MBA altogether.

Hate to say it, but it is Wharton or bust on this one. In most cases a non elite MBA will not be worth the 2 years wages + the cost of the program itself.

If you want to break into finance, T10 (maybe T15) or bust. If you are looking to move up in your career and your company will pay for all or part of school, do the Villanova Center City MBA. It is located on like 17th and South, in the Duane Morris building.

Drexel and Temple offer PT MBA's, but I personally think the Nova program allows for more flexibility outside of Philadelphia.

Whatever you want though. PT MBA programs are more about your feel and opinion on things. Temple does a good job, as does Drexel.

The Fox School of Business at Temple University is your next best option. After that Villanova, Drexel, and Penn State Great Valley are regional options.

BSA --- PM me when you have a chance.

I don't want to sound like a shill for Villanova, but I personally think it is the best school in Philly outside of Wharton. The just opened a center city campus for working professionals and the main campus is gorgeous. There are tons of Villanova alumni on the street who are more than willing to help you out. All of the classes are at night so you can work full time also.

Go tour the campuses and then make your decision.
