Pre-MBA internships in NYC?

Hi All,

Was recently accepted to CBS and am looking at pursuing a career in Investment Management. My background is Corporate Banking, (which isn't investment focused at all) so would love to pursue internships pre-MBA to be better prepared for future recruitment ops. Pay isn't as much a factor has having some good experience prior to school.

From folk's experiences, what's the best way to go about finding pre-MBA internships in NYC? (Or just any Pre-MBA internship in general)  From what I see, I don't see many formal postings for these roles so would assume it's more legwork and networking to find something.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, pursuing pre-MBA internships in NYC, especially in Investment Management, requires a proactive approach. Here’s how you can go about it:

  1. Leverage CBS's Location and Resources: Being in NYC gives you access to numerous opportunities. CBS offers school-year internships, even during the academic year, which are often posted daily. While many of these roles may be unpaid or at smaller funds, they provide valuable experience to build your resume and prepare for summer recruiting.

  2. Networking is Key: Since formal postings for pre-MBA internships are rare, networking becomes essential. Reach out to alumni, professionals in the industry, and CBS connections. Focus on Directors and MDs, as they are more likely to respond and provide opportunities.

  3. Target Hedge Funds and Boutique Firms: Smaller firms and hedge funds in NYC are more likely to offer flexible, informal internship opportunities. These roles might not be widely advertised, so direct outreach is crucial.

  4. Showcase Your Interest in Investment Management: Highlight your willingness to learn and your passion for the field. Even with a Corporate Banking background, demonstrating initiative and a clear interest in investing can make a strong impression.

  5. Prepare for the Legwork: As you mentioned, finding these roles involves significant effort. Be ready to send cold emails, attend networking events, and follow up with professionals you meet.

  6. Utilize CBS Alumni and Career Services: CBS has a strong alumni network in finance. Use this to your advantage by scheduling coffee chats and informational interviews to uncover hidden opportunities.

By combining networking, leveraging CBS's resources, and targeting smaller firms, you can secure a pre-MBA internship that aligns with your career goals in Investment Management.

I'm planning on applying for it and taking the requisite courses and join CSIMA; are you part of it?

I'm not in it but have heard good things.
