Redo Masters?
I went to a crappy uni for my Msc in Finance (I'm based in Europe). Since graduating over a year ago I have felt very strongly limited by my uni's poor brand and lack of strong alumni placement. My goal is to work at a PE fund/HF. It really kills my confidence knowing that my potential has been held back by a naive and uninformed decision I made before I realised how much emphasis the finance world places on pedigree. I genuinely feel very depressed about this and I don't know what to do... Is it a stupid idea to go back and do it again at a top uni? Alternatively, should I hold out for an MBA (which seems less useful in Europe) or just keep fighting against the odds and constantly try to lateral my way up?
I would really appreciate some advice on this. Thank you.
It doesn't make much sense to go back for another degree in the same subject. If you really want to go back and get another masters, it would need to be in another subject other than finance. I would focus on either getting an MBA, which is less helpful in Europe but is another option, or lateral your way up.
Thanks for your comment. Would you say the CFA is worth it given my situation? Or would my time be better spent honing my modelling skills and aggressively applying/networking?
Don't think in terms of degree. I know how you feel, being myself European and from a non-target. Networking appears imo the best option, because the CFA is more of an accounting thing and isn't that prestigious at all.
You're depressed, which hinders your ability to connect effectively with people and present yourself in a good light. Slow down, and think about your profile. Remove the "degree" component. Think about what you've done so far, your successes, strengths, achievements. Then, start networking as if you were the fucking king of the world. Look up those masters of the universe on LinkedIn, most of them honestly look like weak bitches. You could fuck their wife and steal their car, but you won't, because that's not your core business. Your core business is to learn and become better than them.
