For breaking into bulge bracket (BB) investment banking or venture capital (VC) in NYC, Ross (University of Michigan) generally has the edge over Johns Hopkins University (JHU). Here's why:
Recruitment Pipeline: Ross is a target school for many BB firms and has a strong presence in NYC finance. Its alumni network is well-established in investment banking and private equity, making it easier for students to secure internships and full-time roles.
Business School Focus: Ross is part of a top-tier business school, which provides specialized resources, career services, and networking opportunities tailored to finance careers. JHU, while prestigious, is more known for its strengths in STEM and healthcare-related fields, and its finance pipeline is not as robust.
Location and Alumni Network: While JHU is closer to NYC geographically, Ross's alumni network in finance is significantly larger and more influential in NYC. This network can be a critical factor in landing competitive roles in BB and VC.
On-Campus Recruiting (OCR): Ross has a well-structured OCR process with top firms actively recruiting on campus. JHU's OCR for finance roles is less extensive, which could make the path to BB and VC more challenging.
In summary, Ross is the better choice for a direct path to BB and VC in NYC due to its strong finance focus, alumni network, and recruitment opportunities.

i voted Ross but JHU is strong in VC because a lot of JHU alumni seem to work in biotech VC
Ross is better for traditional IB, but JHU isn't bad there if your son can network harder
