School Choice - UVA McIntire vs Barnard College- for IB

Hi everyone — I’d really appreciate any insight or advice.

Background:

  • Class of 2027, rising junior, attended target school
  • Missed Spring 2025 recruiting for 2026 IB summer internships due to personal circumstances
  • Transferring schools for junior year
  • Very interested in IB and ready to hustle to get back on track

Questions:

  1. School choice: deciding between UVA McIntire (Commerce) and Barnard College (Economics) for transfer. Given my situation and the goal of recovering for IB recruiting, which would position me better?
  2. Does Barnard have the same access to Columbia’s OCR and recruiting network as Columbia? If so, does that provide a stronger opportunity than McIntire’s target school status and OCR?
  3. I understand most McIntire students who place into IB end up in NYC — does Barnard’s location in NYC still offer a meaningful advantage when it comes to networking or firm access?

Any insight on how these two paths compare in terms of IB recruiting, OCR access, alumni engagement, and overall outcomes would be extremely helpful. Thanks so much!

I'm confused.

You missed the boat from a target but you're looking to transfer to UVA (a target sure but a weaker one) or Barnard (i'd go as far as to say its a non-target).

But even that, you'd be coming in as a junior anyway, and SA recruiting these days happens during your sophomore year so even if you transferred it wouldn't matter anyway.

Do you mind sharing what school you're currently at?

The advantage of Barnard is you have access to the vast majority of Columbia resources and are in the city. In-semester internships and networking are the best way to get back on track rather than relying on the normal pipeline since you missed it. If you’re willing to put in the work that has more upside torque to your efforts vs UVA at this point would be my bet
