Semi-target engineering student - I hate my degree

I’m currently at a semi-target university (think Bristol, Bath, Durham) studying EEE MEng with a placement. I’ve completed Years 1 and 2 with marks of 72% and 77% respectively, but I’m really not enjoying my course and can’t wait to finish.

I’m one month into a year-long placement at an engineering consulting firm. It’s okay, but I’d prefer a role without the heavy engineering focus. I also volunteered for a few months at a consulting non-profit, which I found quite interesting.

Do you think my year in engineering consulting, combined with my consulting non-profit experience, would be enough to break into MBB or Tier 2 consulting? Honestly, I feel a bit at fault ngl I had offers from both Imperial and UCL but chose to stay at home, i regret this like every day.

I’m now considering transferring to the BEng and aiming for a top MiM. I’ve been looking at LSE MSc or Cambridge MPhil programs and can afford the costs. I also know a few students at my university who have secured placements at Tier 2 or smaller boutique consulting firms. There is some MBB presence straight out of undergrad at my uni, but it’s not as strong as at Oxbridge or Imperial. Im applying to some MBB/T2/Big4 internships but i havent got much hope.

what should i do?

Breaking into MBB or Tier 2 consulting from a semi-target engineering background is challenging but absolutely possible with the right strategy. Here's a breakdown of what you should focus on:

1. Leverage Your Current Experience

  • Your year-long placement in engineering consulting and your volunteer work at a consulting non-profit are valuable. Highlight transferable skills like problem-solving, teamwork, and analytical thinking. These are highly sought after in consulting.
  • Make sure to frame your engineering background as a strength. Consulting firms value candidates with technical expertise, especially for roles in industries like energy, technology, or operations.

2. Internships and Networking

  • Applying to MBB/Tier 2/Big 4 internships is a great move. Even if you feel your chances are slim, don’t underestimate the power of networking. Reach out to alumni from your university who are at these firms, especially those with non-traditional backgrounds. Personal connections can significantly boost your chances.
  • Attend consulting events, webinars, and case workshops. These are great opportunities to meet recruiters and consultants.

3. Consider the MiM or MPhil

  • Transferring to a BEng and pursuing a top MiM (like LSE or Cambridge) is a solid plan. These programs are well-regarded by consulting firms and can help you pivot away from engineering.
  • Focus on building a strong application for these programs. Your academic performance (72% and 77%) is already strong, but make sure to emphasize leadership, extracurriculars, and your consulting-related experiences.

4. Case Prep and Applications

  • Start preparing for case interviews now. MBB and Tier 2 firms place a heavy emphasis on case-solving ability. Use resources like case books, online platforms, and mock interviews to practice.
  • Tailor your applications to highlight your unique background. Emphasize your technical expertise, consulting exposure, and motivation to transition into strategy consulting.

5. Don’t Dwell on Regrets

  • While it’s natural to regret not choosing Imperial or UCL, focus on what you can control now. Many semi-target students have successfully broken into consulting by leveraging their unique experiences and networking effectively.

6. Backup Plans

  • If MBB feels out of reach immediately, consider starting at a Tier 2 or Big 4 firm. These firms often have strong exit opportunities into MBB or other prestigious roles.
  • Smaller boutique consulting firms can also be a great stepping stone. They often value diverse backgrounds and provide excellent experience.

Final Thoughts

Your engineering background, combined with your consulting-related experiences, gives you a unique edge. Focus on networking, case prep, and building a strong application for internships and MiM/MPhil programs. With persistence and the right strategy, breaking into consulting is definitely achievable!
