Semi-target engineering student - I hate my degree
I’m currently at a semi-target university (think Bristol, Bath, Durham) studying EEE MEng with a placement. I’ve completed Years 1 and 2 with marks of 72% and 77% respectively, but I’m really not enjoying my course and can’t wait to finish.
I’m one month into a year-long placement at an engineering consulting firm. It’s okay, but I’d prefer a role without the heavy engineering focus. I also volunteered for a few months at a consulting non-profit, which I found quite interesting.
Do you think my year in engineering consulting, combined with my consulting non-profit experience, would be enough to break into MBB or Tier 2 consulting? Honestly, I feel a bit at fault ngl I had offers from both Imperial and UCL but chose to stay at home, i regret this like every day.
I’m now considering transferring to the BEng and aiming for a top MiM. I’ve been looking at LSE MSc or Cambridge MPhil programs and can afford the costs. I also know a few students at my university who have secured placements at Tier 2 or smaller boutique consulting firms. There is some MBB presence straight out of undergrad at my uni, but it’s not as strong as at Oxbridge or Imperial. Im applying to some MBB/T2/Big4 internships but i havent got much hope.
what should i do?
Breaking into MBB or Tier 2 consulting from a semi-target engineering background is challenging but absolutely possible with the right strategy. Here's a breakdown of what you should focus on:
1. Leverage Your Current Experience
2. Internships and Networking
3. Consider the MiM or MPhil
4. Case Prep and Applications
5. Don’t Dwell on Regrets
6. Backup Plans
Final Thoughts
Your engineering background, combined with your consulting-related experiences, gives you a unique edge. Focus on networking, case prep, and building a strong application for internships and MiM/MPhil programs. With persistence and the right strategy, breaking into consulting is definitely achievable!
