Should I choose an unrelated degree from a target university or an economics degree from a low semi target? My goal in IB

My goal is IB.
I have an offer to study economics at a semi target e.g. Bristol

And I have an offer to study an unrelated degree e.g. geography at oxbridge?

For anyone wondering I had no chance at getting into econ at oxbridge thus I applied for an unrelated degree.
Which would be better? as my aim is to break into IB.

Which should I accept?

Econ at a semi target e.g. bristol

Choosing between an unrelated degree at a top-tier target university (like Oxbridge) and a relevant degree (Economics) at a semi-target (like Bristol) depends on several factors, but based on the most helpful WSO content, here's the breakdown:

  1. Target University Advantage:

    • Oxbridge is considered an ultra-target for investment banking. Simply being at Oxbridge, regardless of your degree, gives you a significant edge in networking, access to top-tier recruitment events, and alumni connections. Banks heavily recruit from these institutions, and the prestige of Oxbridge often outweighs the specific subject studied.
  2. Degree Relevance:

    • While Economics is a relevant degree for IB, the prestige of the university often carries more weight than the subject itself. For example, a Geography degree from Oxbridge is likely to open more doors in IB than an Economics degree from a semi-target like Bristol. This is because banks prioritize candidates from ultra-target schools due to their rigorous selection processes and strong alumni networks.
  3. Recruitment Realities:

    • According to WSO insights, 90% of IB positions are filled by candidates from specific universities, with Oxbridge being at the top of the list. While Bristol is a respected semi-target, it does not offer the same level of recruitment opportunities as Oxbridge.
  4. Your Strategy:

    • If you choose Oxbridge, you can still build a strong IB profile by:
      • Joining finance-related societies and clubs.
      • Networking aggressively with alumni in the industry.
      • Gaining relevant internships or spring weeks early on.
    • If you choose Bristol, you’ll need to work harder to stand out, as the competition from target school candidates will be tougher.

Conclusion:
Go for the unrelated degree at Oxbridge. The prestige and recruitment opportunities at an ultra-target like Oxbridge far outweigh the advantage of studying Economics at a semi-target. However, ensure you actively build your IB profile through networking, internships, and extracurricular activities to compensate for the unrelated degree.
