Should I choose RSM over UK universities?

Right now I’m studying economics at a small, no-name university in France. I’m from a small city, and I’ve realised that the opportunities I’m looking for just aren’t here. So after I finish this first year, I’m planning to start over and apply to a stronger Bachelor’s program. My long-term goal is to work in the UK and ideally the US, but I know that’s extremely difficult. Based on my grades and the profiles I’ve seen, I think I have a good chance of getting into Rotterdam School of Management. I’m also considering semi-target universities in the UK, but the costs are much higher, while Rotterdam would only cost me around €2k per year. From what I’ve seen, RSM graduates place very well into top Master’s programs like HEC and LBS, which is exactly what I’m aiming for. My idea is: RSM Bachelor’s → top Master’s (HEC/LBS/etc.) → job in the UK (and maybe one day the US).

For people who know the landscape, Does this seem like a realistic and smart plan?Is choosing Rotterdam over expensive UK universities a good move if my end goal is a top Master’s and a career in London?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, your plan to choose Rotterdam School of Management (RSM) over more expensive UK universities is both realistic and strategic, especially given your financial constraints and long-term goals. Here's why:

1. Cost-Effectiveness and ROI

  • RSM offers a high-quality education at a fraction of the cost compared to UK universities. With tuition around €2k per year, you can save significantly while still accessing strong academic and networking opportunities.
  • This financial advantage allows you to allocate resources toward a top-tier Master's program later, such as HEC or LBS, which are critical for breaking into competitive finance roles in London or the US.

2. Reputation and Placement

  • RSM is well-regarded in Europe, particularly for its business and management programs. While it may not be a "target" school for London finance jobs directly, its graduates frequently secure spots in prestigious Master's programs like HEC, LBS, and LSE, which are strong feeders into the UK job market.
  • Previous WSO threads highlight that RSM alumni have successfully transitioned to top Master's programs, which aligns with your goal of using a Master's as a stepping stone to a career in London.

3. Path to London and Beyond

  • Your proposed path—RSM Bachelor's → top Master's → London job—is a proven strategy. Many students from semi-target schools like RSM leverage a strong Master's program to access London finance roles.
  • While UK universities might offer slightly better direct placement into London, the cost difference and your ability to excel at RSM make it a smart choice. Additionally, RSM's international focus and exchange opportunities can help you build a global network.

4. Considerations for UK Universities

  • If you were to choose a UK university, you'd need to target semi-target schools like Warwick, Durham, or Nottingham, which are more expensive and may not offer a significantly better outcome than RSM for your goals.
  • The key differentiator for UK universities is their proximity to London and stronger alumni networks in the UK. However, this advantage may not justify the higher cost, especially if you're planning to pursue a Master's at a top-tier institution.

5. Actionable Advice

  • Focus on excelling academically at RSM and building a strong profile through internships, extracurriculars, and networking.
  • Leverage RSM's exchange programs and career services to gain international exposure and relevant experience.
  • Prepare early for Master's applications by maintaining a high GPA, scoring well on standardized tests (e.g., GMAT), and building a compelling narrative for your career goals.

Final Verdict:

Choosing RSM over more expensive UK universities is a smart and realistic move, given your financial constraints and long-term aspirations. With a strong performance at RSM and a top Master's program, you'll be well-positioned to achieve your goal of working in London and potentially the US.

For sure, go to Rotterdam and then aim for HEC or LBS. You will need a GPA of 8+ which is like top 15% (not easy but doable if you work hard from day 1). Good luck
