SSE vs. RSM vs. EUR – Best Path to Private Equity?

Hello monkeys,

I have recently been admitted to the BSc in Business and Economics at Stockholm School of Economics (SSE). I believe I will also be admitted to the IBA program at Rotterdam School of Management (RSM) and the IBEB program at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR).

I am having trouble deciding which program to commit to. My goal is to work in private equity (PE) in the US, UK, or EU. I understand that breaking into PE straight out of undergrad is not realistic and will require work experience and further education.

Which of these schools opens the most doors and would give me the best shot at reaching my goal? What would be the most realistic career path toward PE given my circumstances?

I am from Eastern Europe, but I will be learning the local language fluently.

Also, how would you compare these schools to top targets such as Oxbridge and LSE? Are they really that far behind?

Thank you in advance!

When it comes to breaking into private equity (PE), the choice of school plays a significant role in shaping your career trajectory. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how SSE, RSM, and EUR stack up for your goals:

1. Stockholm School of Economics (SSE):

  • Strengths: SSE has a strong reputation in Northern Europe and offers excellent networking opportunities, particularly in the Nordic region. Its MSc in Finance program is highly regarded and provides a pathway to top-tier firms in London and Europe. Additionally, SSE offers opportunities like a double degree with Bocconi or CEMS MiM, which can further enhance your profile.
  • Placement: While SSE is not as globally recognized as Oxbridge or LSE, it has a solid track record of placing students into investment banking (IB) roles, which is a common stepping stone to PE.
  • Consideration: If you aim to leverage the Nordic network and are open to pursuing a master's degree later, SSE is a strong contender.

2. Rotterdam School of Management (RSM):

  • Strengths: RSM is known for its affordability and strong business programs. It has a good reputation in the Netherlands and offers access to IB roles in Amsterdam and occasionally London.
  • Placement: While RSM is a respected name, it tends to lag behind SSE in terms of reputation and placement in top-tier IB and PE roles, especially outside the Netherlands.
  • Consideration: If budget is a major concern and you are comfortable with a more regional focus, RSM could be a viable option.

3. Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR):

  • Strengths: The IBEB program at EUR is academically rigorous and provides a solid foundation in economics and business. It shares some of the same advantages as RSM but is more theoretical in nature.
  • Placement: Similar to RSM, EUR has a strong presence in the Netherlands but is less recognized internationally compared to SSE.
  • Consideration: EUR is a good choice if you prefer a more economics-focused curriculum and plan to stay in the Netherlands for work.

Comparison to Oxbridge and LSE:

  • Oxbridge and LSE are in a different league when it comes to global recognition and placement in IB and PE. They are considered top targets for London-based roles and have unparalleled alumni networks.
  • SSE, RSM, and EUR are strong regional players but are generally considered a tier below Oxbridge and LSE for breaking into PE.

Most Realistic Career Path to PE:

  1. Undergraduate Degree: Choose SSE if you prioritize reputation and networking opportunities in Europe. RSM or EUR are solid alternatives if budget or location is a key factor.
  2. Investment Banking: Secure an IB role post-graduation, ideally in London or a major financial hub.
  3. Master’s Degree: Pursue a top-tier MSc in Finance or MBA at schools like LSE, LBS, INSEAD, or HEC Paris to enhance your profile and network.
  4. Private Equity: Transition into PE after gaining 2-3 years of IB experience.

Final Recommendation:

If your ultimate goal is PE and you are willing to invest in further education, SSE offers the strongest platform among the three schools due to its reputation, networking opportunities, and potential for double degrees. However, if cost is a significant constraint, RSM or EUR can still provide a solid foundation, especially if you excel academically and strategically build your network.
