Right now your chances are not great. Assuming that you aren't applying in 2019 (to start in 2020) you need to do a self-assessment and make a plan (beyond just taking the GMAT and performing well) to address any areas of weakness so you are the strongest possible candidate when you submit.

Thanks Linda. I'm thinking of applying in 1-2 years. I'm not dead set on an MBA, but I think it could be a nice option if I manage to get into a top school. Feel like schools other than Stanford/HBS are not worth the $. Would be interested to know if you think i could improve my chances substantially

Hi Attruly,

You're welcome.

To improve your profile:

  1. Prepare for and ace the GMAT.
  2. Commit to something outside of work and pursue it consistently. The commitment can be serving on a non-profit board, organizing a fundraiser, getting involved in an ethnic, political, social or religious organization. But some commitment where you can show leadership and make a difference.
  3. Assume roles where you can grow at work and assume greater responsibility so you can have greater impact.
  4. Have a goal that requires and MBA from HBS/Stanford and show the school that achievement of your goal will add to their luster.
  5. Have solid reasons why you want to attend these particular programs other than it's a "nice option." That's fine for here, but when you apply your reasons should show that the schools will be the bridge between where you are at and achievement of an ambitious but attainable goal.

As I'm sure you realize "not worth the money" depends on what you're making to start and what you want to do after.

Thanks a lot for the feedback Linda. I really appreciate your time. Have taken note of your website, which I will consult a year from now if still considering an MBA
