State School MBA vs Prestigious MBA for Technology
Hello,
I was looking for some advice about whether to pursue an MBA from a SUNY school or try to get into a top tier MBA program for technology. I'm currently a sophomore at a SUNY school and am weighing up my options for the future. My school has a BS/MBA program where I can get both my bachelor's and MBA in 5 years with a concentration in technology. The advantage of this would be that I can save myself a year of school and the program is very cheap, less than 10k per year, and it is AACSB accredited.
Now the disadvantage is I'm not sure what this MBA can do for my future and what value it will have for potential employers. My dream is to get into technology management, possibly at a consulting firm or IB or another financial firm because I believe finance is the most lucrative market for IT. I also love finance, which is why I am studying this subject along with IT, but working at a big technology company like SAP or Apple would be amazing as too.
Going someplace like Tepper, Sloan, or Stern would obviously give me a huge boost in reaching my goals, but who knows if I can even get in? These programs are 50k+ per year for 2 years, so I would be spending 100k instead of 10k for this MBA. If I go this route, the chance for the BS/MBA program would be gone. On another note, ny mentor is CTO of JP Morgan Securities and all he has is a bachelor's from a SUNY school and has worked at companies such as Accenture and Goldman Sachs, so I'm not sure if an MBA is even necessary if you're not looking strictly into finance.
What I'm leaning towards is another program, a BS/MS 5 year program from the SUNY school and trying my luck at a top tier MBA later. The MS would be in Information Science, which might help me get a better job coming out of college and give me a master's degree, which might look good to a top tier MBA admissions office.
Any suggestions? Is the state school MBA worth it?
That state MBA wouldnt be as beneficial, if you are trying to get into IB. You would basically have no real experience for mba level positions in ib.
But Im sure if you go corporate route, it would look alright. but in reality, for IT a bs/ms would be a great combo. And you could still get into top firms as a tech analyst
The only two state MBAs useful for tech would be Berkeley and UCLA.
Ross, McCombs and Darden too, maybe Kelley (IU), Kenan-Flagler (UNC), Fisher (OSU) and Foster (UW)
