STEM vs. Finance related Degree - Discussion
Hi, if I go on linkedin, I see a lot of people working in finance with STEM related degrees such as Mathematics and Engineering, particularly in the UK where I am based. Obviously when it comes to getting a job there are many factors that are to be taken into consideration. I know of people with maths degrees from targets working in back office positions and people with accounting degrees from non-targets work in FO positions. More than anything, the work experience appears to be a major factor. However, if I look at FO positions in the UK, particularly Bloomberg and Barclays, a lot of roles filled by STEM degrees. How much do employers favour STEM degrees?
Well, just a background about myself: I have a bachelor and a master from a top business school. If I would have chosen today, I would have taken a STEM related degree because your brain will be used to analyse ideas and tasks from a technical perspective. Something that no MSc in Finance can teach you. No matter the job, they will teach you everything on the condition you have a strong background and good technical skills.
