Strength of Waterloo?
Hey everyone - Canadian high school student (class of ‘24) interested in pursuing high finance.
I’m interested in doing systems design engineering at Waterloo, which seems to have carved out a decent quant presence but still seems to be an unorthodox location for FO recruiting. However, I’ve heard recently that Waterloo placements for BBs has improved recently, especially for engineering kids. Can anyone comment on the strength of the Waterloo-IB pipeline in 2023?
Waterloo is a great school to do engineering at
Waterloo AFM and Math kids had placements at Blackstone, point72, pjt, evercore, Moelis and more
It is very good for finance too
Engineers are mostly in trading roles. Most of the bankers come from the school's investment fund or math finance kids.
Waterloo, as well as Laurier + Waterloo dual degree students, have great placements due to the strength of Waterloo's co-op program. It'll still be hard work to get placed well so you can't rely on co-op to find you amazing jobs and you need to join relevant clubs and do everything right.
Where did you hear that Waterloo placements in IB increased for engineering students lol
All the placements in IB at BB/EB at AFM or Math kids

Seems a lot of confusion in this thread, Uwaterloo has a lot of placements into BBs for vol/algo trading worldwide. Select BB asian offices especially. Software/ece/systems usually the top recruited programs along with top talent from math department.
Very unlikely anyone studying systems engineering wants to do banking but never know but the roles the OP is discussing is on s&t side.
just go to Ivey and do Eng ur first 2 years if u really want to
Waterloo math finance student here. Go for math programs like CFM, FARM if you want to go technical side of finance. Go to AFM for IB related roles. It’s a good school and dozens of students work at bay street every coop cycle. Feel free to dm
