Study Abroad Tutorial Ideas?

Hey everyone, senior returning to top IB group planning on on-cycle for PE or L/S roles. I'm doing study abroad in Europe this school year and have to pick a tutorial (~20 hrs/wk of self-directed study per week for a semester). Since I'm not a finance major/don't have many finance courses at school, I wanted to propose a tutorial topic that would deepen my knowledge of technical financial topics/investing as well as help me prep for on-cycle PE and L/S interviews. Curious if anyone has any ideas. Thanks!

That sounds like an exciting opportunity! Here are a few tutorial topics that could help deepen your understanding of finance and investment, and prepare you for PE and L/S interviews:

  1. Financial Statement Analysis: Understanding financial statements is crucial in finance. You could focus on learning how to analyze income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements, and how these documents are used to assess a company's performance and make investment decisions.

  2. Valuation Techniques: This could include studying various valuation methods such as Discounted Cash Flow (DCF), Comparable Company Analysis (Comps), and Leveraged Buyout (LBO) analysis. These are fundamental concepts in investment banking and private equity.

  3. Investment Strategies: You could delve into different investment strategies used by PE and L/S funds. This could include studying topics like merger arbitrage, distressed securities, and event-driven investing.

  4. Financial Modeling: Building financial models is a key skill in finance. You could focus on learning how to build models for valuation, M&A, LBO, and other financial transactions.

  5. Market and Economic Trends: Understanding the broader economic and market trends can help in making investment decisions. You could study how different factors like interest rates, inflation, and geopolitical events impact the financial markets.

Remember, the key is to choose a topic that you're genuinely interested in. This will make the learning process more enjoyable and rewarding. Good luck with your studies!
