Tech -> Finance post-MBA opportunities

I went to an ivy league undergrad and studied computer science, and started my first job at Google/Facebook as a Software Engineer earlier this year.

However, many of my friends now work in finance, (I have close friends working in IB, AM, ER, and PE) and I think that it is a career path that I would be interested in. While my current job is comfortable and well-paid (and I am performing very well according to my manager), I'm not sure it is something that I want to do long term.

If I could theoretically get into an M7 school, is it common at all for people to do post-MBA IBD and break into HF or PE without pre-MBA finance experience? It seems like PE might not be an option for me at all, but what about HF? Or would I basically be stuck in IB if I do an MBA and want to go into finance? I have started investing in my own stocks using some pretty basic quantitative strategies/evaluations which has been a part of my burgeoning interest in finance.

I also have some interviews for Quantitative hedge funds coming up (2 Sigma, Citadel, AQR, etc.). I will be interviewing for software engineering roles, but was wondering if being a software engineer at one of these competitive financial companies would be better for b-school apps than being a software engineering at a top tech company.

I don't really know a whole lot about this world and its paths/opportunities and appreciate any input or responses to my thoughts. Thanks everyone
