To all the SAT nerds out there (Recent college grads or current students)
Hello smart kids,
I took the SAT more than 12 years ago (Feels like an eternity). I want my nephew to go to a top school so that he can follow in his uncle's footstep in banking. Anyone has a study plan with the books I need to buy him to place in the top percentiles? He has 3 more years of school, but I am starting to prep him now. To give you an idea of how old I am - When I took the SAT it was out of 1600 and had only two portions: math and verbal. Anything I should know or extra information would be much appreciated as well - potentially forums that are more appropriate for that type of discussions.
Also he has to take 3 subject SAT exams, so recommendations on what publishers are best for that would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
In my experience the best (and only real way) to improve at the SAT is just to do practice. The best book I've used is still the blue book from Collegeboard with ~10 tests??
"SAT 2400" from Kaplan "Up Your Score" Lots and lots of practice tests
Subject tests should be easy, they barely require studying, just have him do some practice tests and you should be golden.
Barrons for publishers.
And second on practice tests. Do a ton of them (at least 1 per week) Understand why s/he got certain questions wrong.
EDIT: For the writing portion, given two criteria, how much you write vs how well you write - the former is more important. As long as there is some logical progression, its fine. Doesn't need to win a Pulitzer.
I'd generally say to use the Blue Book, with the 10 practice tests, but they're changing the format of the SAT. Most of the material that's currently available won't be useful.
You might also want to check out college confidential. You'll read stuff from a lot of insane parents and high schoolers, but overall I still found it useful when preparing for admissions exams.
