UChicago or Duke ?
Im in quite the dilemma right now, I was originally going to attend the Uchicago summer school to apply ed 0 as the uni was originally my first choice. However, after hearing some stuff about the sheer social awkwardness from 2 people who recently graduated I am having other thoughts. I know for a fact that my profile isn't good enough for an ivy even for ED, hence would you recommend Duke ? As it is a more standard university. Or any other universities which have really good academics but have an element of fun too. (I would be pursuing economics primarly)
If you are unconfident in your ability to get into an ivy, Duke ED is likely also a long shot. Duke/UChicago/Northwestern are just as hard to get into than many ivy league schools.
Nah. Maybe on par with Cornell/brown, but UChicago and Duke especially are heavy ED schools unlike ivies.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to consider:
UChicago: Academically, UChicago is a powerhouse, especially for economics. It's often regarded as one of the top schools globally for the subject. However, the social environment at UChicago is frequently described as intense and competitive, with a "grinder" culture. Some students find the atmosphere socially awkward or less vibrant compared to other schools. If you're someone who thrives in a rigorous academic setting and values intellectual challenges above all else, UChicago could be a great fit. However, if you're looking for a more balanced college experience with a mix of academics and social life, it might not be ideal.
Duke: Duke offers a strong academic program, particularly in economics, while also providing a more traditional college experience. The campus culture is known for being lively, with a good balance of academics, sports, and social activities. If you're looking for a university that combines strong academics with a vibrant social scene, Duke might be a better choice.
Other Options: If you're open to exploring other universities with strong economics programs and a balanced social environment, consider schools like Northwestern, Brown, or even Vanderbilt. Northwestern, for instance, is a target school for finance and offers a more collaborative environment. Brown provides a relaxed academic atmosphere with plenty of opportunities in finance and consulting, as noted in WSO threads.
Ultimately, your decision should align with your personal preferences and career goals. If you prioritize academic rigor and are okay with a more intense environment, UChicago is a solid choice. If you value a more balanced college experience, Duke or other similar schools might be a better fit.
