UChicago to Stern Transfer
Got into Stern as a sophomore transfer, and torn between staying at UChicago or making the move. I haven’t really enjoyed my time at UChicago mainly due to the social scene and the neighborhood. I haven’t found my group, and overall it’s made my experience pretty rough. That said, it’s hard to walk away from the school’s reputation, recruiting placement, and the network I've built through clubs.
Stern is obviously great for NYC recruiting (where I want to work post-grad) and has a strong brand, but I’m a bit concerned socially. I’ve heard Stern kids can be pretty intense, and the lack of a real campus makes me worry it could feel isolating. I’m an international student from a major Asian city, so city life isn't new to me, and I really enjoy NYC.
Stern offers a fresh start socially, strong recruiting, and a location I like, but I worry the social experience might not be any better than UChicago. On the flip side, staying at UChicago means keeping my connections and its elite reputation, even if I’m not happy there.
Not sure what to do right now so any insight would be appreciated. For context, I'm aiming for VC/PE/REPE post-grad.

Staying at UChicago

Cons:
Transferring to Stern
Pros:
Cons:
Key Considerations
Recruiting Goals: If NYC is your ultimate destination and you’re set on VC/PE/REPE, Stern’s location and network could give you a significant edge. However, UChicago’s reputation and placement into buy-side roles shouldn’t be underestimated.
Social Fit: Since your dissatisfaction at UChicago stems largely from the social scene, consider whether Stern’s environment will truly be an improvement. While NYC offers endless opportunities, Stern’s intense culture might not align with what you’re looking for socially.
Long-Term Brand Value: Both schools have strong reputations, but UChicago might carry slightly more weight globally and for top MBA programs. Stern, however, is a powerhouse for NYC finance roles.
Final Thoughts
If your unhappiness at UChicago is significantly affecting your experience and you’re confident Stern aligns better with your career goals and personal preferences, transferring could be the right move. However, if you believe you can endure the social challenges at UChicago and leverage its elite reputation and existing network, staying might be the better long-term play.
Ultimately, weigh how much your current dissatisfaction impacts your ability to thrive academically and professionally. If you’re not happy, it’s hard to perform at your best.

Rising junior at stern going to top BB. Don’t do it - people here are weird and psychotic and the recruiting outcomes are mid per capita. Stay in Chicago.
do you have any other options beside stern?
don't do it brova man
I went to UChicago undergrad and also didn't love the social scene there, but I still wouldn't have made a move like this. Call me shallow, but it's hard to give up the prestige of a UChicago degree.
The social scene will get better as you get more settled. Some of my closest friends were from my dorms, and those friendships usually took a year to develop. You'll probably find your niche by the end of sophomore year, so don't sweat it.
You're going to dislike Stern more. Stay at U Chicago. What would you define as "your people" (like describe your HS friends).
Rising senior at Stern. Don't do it. I have multiple Chicago peeps at my Bank, so very much a target. Well respected school name, so you won't have any issues recruiting into NYC. Can guarantee that the social scene at Stern will absolutely not be any better, as it is full of boring, insufferable bots. It is completely normal to not have found your crowd yet anyways -- you still have 3 years of college life ahead of you. Whatever you do though, both schools are still top tier
