UCL vs Warwick
Recently completed 6th form and am currently holding an offer for BSc Information Management for Business (IMB) but would it be better to pursue BSc Econ/E&M at Warwick through clearing? I am aware of the marginal difference between the schools and that the courses generally dont matter but perhaps Warwick would be better as I can't find many people in IB who did IMB at UCL. Does this matter in the long run?
stick w/UCL
IMB at UCL is known to be THE mickey mouse course, but not sure how it is perceived within the industry
Well no one cares
When comparing UCL's BSc Information Management for Business (IMB) and Warwick's BSc Economics/Economics & Management (E&M) for a career in Investment Banking (IB), here’s what you need to consider:
Target School Status:
Both UCL and Warwick are considered target schools for IB recruitment in the UK. However, Warwick has a slight edge due to its strong reputation in economics and finance-related programs, as well as its consistent placement in IB roles.
Course Relevance:
While the specific course you study is often less important than the university's brand, certain degrees like Economics or E&M are more traditional and widely recognized pathways into IB. IMB at UCL is less common among IB professionals, which might make networking and alumni connections slightly more challenging.
Networking Opportunities:
Warwick is known for its strong finance societies and active alumni network in IB. This could provide better access to networking events, mentorship, and Spring Week opportunities. UCL also has a solid network, but IMB graduates may not have the same level of representation in IB as Warwick Economics/E&M graduates.
Long-Term Impact:
In the long run, the university's brand and your ability to leverage its resources (societies, alumni, internships) will matter more than the specific course. Both UCL and Warwick are prestigious, so your personal effort in networking, gaining relevant experience, and excelling academically will be the deciding factors.
Recommendation:
If you are confident you can secure a spot in Warwick's Economics/E&M program through clearing, it might be a better option for IB due to the program's stronger alignment with the industry and Warwick's reputation in finance. However, if you prefer UCL's location in London and are willing to work harder to overcome the lesser representation of IMB graduates in IB, UCL can still be a viable choice.
