How wouldn't you have the same alum base? what? As an NYU CAS student you can reach out to Stern alums

Buddy of mine explained this to me one time and the main difference is the firms will recruit heavily through the Stern clubs. If you are not part of Stern you can join clubs but the access to the events can be limited. Doesn't stop you from reaching out and networking via the event once you see who is there, but you'll be one of many doing that. Some Stern alumni will help non Stern students and some won't. If your doing CAS Econ I would create a list of everyone who graduated with that degree at companies you are targeting and begin networking.

It depends. I think the econ guys are way too oversaturated at NYU and a lot of the times the people who do get to network with Stern alumni come from interesting backgrounds at other NYU schools and majors.

For example, a friend who got into a top group at JPM/GS/MS had majored in something really technical and specific (at CAS) to that group’s mandate and crushed all the Stern competition during recruiting.

Just be smart and try not to be unoriginal. There’s countless NYU econ guys trying to break into finance and all that yells is “Not good enough for Stern”. If you major in something very specific to you that you’re passionate about and that you can leverage into a specific aspect in finance then do that.

Yea, would agree with this. Instead of majoring in Econ, I'd actually recommend maybe even something like CS or Biology or Math etc. however econ isnt a bad choice and you can for sure break in with econ.

Also on your resume you can just say youre double majoring in econ and something else and once u get the internship offer just drop the other major
