UNC Kenan-Flagler (Full-Ride) vs. Michigan Ross (Sticker) MBA
Hi Guys,
I am looking to pivot from Tech Strategy at a startup to Investment Banking in NYC. I was offered a full-ride from UNC KF for a full-time MBA vs. sticker price at Michigan (Ross) and am considering what the difference in career outcomes would be. Ideally, I am aiming for an IB position in NYC targeting an industrials or technology group.
I checked out # of alumni working at BB, middle market, and boutique and really only noticed a big difference in # of alumni at boutique investment banks. What is your opinion on difference between UNC vs Ross? Is there a significant difference in career outcomes coming from those MBA programs?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:
Investment Banking Placement: Michigan Ross has a stronger reputation and track record for placing graduates into top-tier investment banking roles, particularly in NYC. The school has a well-established pipeline to BB (Bulge Bracket) and EB (Elite Boutique) banks, with robust on-campus recruiting and alumni networks in finance. Ross's career services and resources are highly regarded, offering extensive support for resume building, networking, and interview preparation.
UNC Kenan-Flagler's Strengths: While UNC KF is a solid program, its placement in investment banking, especially in NYC, is not as strong as Ross. The alumni network in IB is smaller, particularly at boutique and elite firms. However, the full-ride scholarship significantly reduces your financial burden, which is a major consideration.
Cost vs. ROI: Paying full sticker price at Ross means a significant financial investment, but the potential ROI in terms of career outcomes in IB could justify it. If your goal is NYC IB, Ross provides a clearer and more direct path. On the other hand, the full-ride at UNC KF minimizes financial risk, but you may need to work harder to break into top IB roles, leveraging networking and off-campus recruiting.
Targeting Industrials or Technology Groups: Both schools can provide opportunities in these sectors, but Ross's stronger presence in NYC and its alumni network in IB could give you an edge in securing roles in these specific groups.
Recommendation:
If your primary goal is to maximize your chances of landing an IB role in NYC, particularly at a BB or EB, Michigan Ross is the better choice despite the higher cost. However, if minimizing financial risk is a priority and you're confident in your ability to network and hustle for opportunities, UNC KF with a full-ride is a compelling option.

I went to Ross for undergrad and think the world of the university. That being said, full ride at UNC is likely the answer here. I worked with a lot of MBA associates from UNC (and Ross for that matter), they definitely place well into banking
