Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

University Choices for Investment Banking:

  1. UK:

    • University of Warwick: Highly regarded for finance and investment banking. Warwick has a strong alumni network in London, which is a global hub for IB.
    • King's College London (KCL): While prestigious, it doesn't have the same IB pipeline strength as Warwick. Warwick would be a better choice if IB is your goal.
    • University of Manchester and University of Bristol: These are solid universities but are not as strong as Warwick for IB placements.
  2. Canada:

    • University of Toronto (U of T): A top choice in Canada with a strong reputation. It has a decent pipeline to Toronto's IB scene, but breaking into the US market as an international student can be challenging due to visa issues.
    • Western University (Ivey Business School): Known for its strong IB placement in Canada and even some US firms. Ivey's HBA program is particularly well-regarded for finance.
  3. Australia:

    • University of Melbourne (U Melb) and University of Sydney (U Syd): Both are top-tier in Australia, but the IB market in Australia is smaller compared to the UK or Canada. Breaking into global IB roles from Australia can be more challenging.

Job Market Insights:

  • UK: The UK has a strong IB market, especially in London. However, as an international student, visa sponsorship can be a hurdle. Warwick's strong alumni network can help mitigate this.
  • Canada: The job market for international students in Canada is indeed tougher, especially for IB roles. Western (Ivey) is your best bet here.
  • Australia: The IB market is smaller, and international students may face challenges in securing roles.

Data Science with Finance:

Adding data science alongside finance can be beneficial. Investment banks are increasingly valuing quantitative and analytical skills, especially for roles in trading, risk management, and fintech. However, for traditional IB roles (M&A, ECM, DCM), networking, internships, and finance-specific skills are more critical.
