University of Georgia Investment Banking

I'm pursuing an undergrad degree at UGA, and I already know that IB is my goal, specifically M&A or FIG. How is their IB pipeline, how is their reputation on the Street, and overall how is it for IB? Thanks in advance!

Of course they do. I can’t speak for other schools, but UGA’s IB alums focus nearly exclusively on Corsair members. The CS peeps “made the cut,” so the early screening process in terms of interest and potential competency are taken care of. Finance Club/SMIF kids go mostly into AM/FP. IB is a different realm

Get into SMIF as it looks good on your resume and builds a good network. Join Apollo and Corsair. The placement is nearly 100% for those who want IB, but it’s incredibly hard to get into if you don’t know a guy who knows a guy.

They sent one guy to Evercore a few years back and have people at BofA, Citi, and lots of middle market and boutique banks. Lots of guys at Truist, former STRH. Raymond James is friendly to UGA students. Biggest problem is no OCR, but these clubs have connections to get you in. Lots of old money at UGA which feeds into real estate, but the banking network isn’t bad, and UGA alumni love seeing another Dawg.

You need a 3.8+ to be competitive. High GPA is 100% necessary to break into banking from UGA. Lots of LMM PE guys from UGA who went to MM banks then landed PE in the south.

UGA is not a target nor a semi-target but it’s arguably the top business school in the SEC behind Vanderbilt. UF differs because they have the MSF program which places well, but that’s only open to UF undergrads.

Emory places better overall, but a good Emory student and a UGA student who is in SMIF and Corsair are neck and neck, and a UGA student with a 4.0 in those clubs are arguably a better candidate bc everyone loves an SEC bro who’s smart.

UGA finance society is useless. Same with international business and all the other clubs. Frisch Capital works closely w Corsair and is just one dude with a mustache who runs a boutique firm in Athens - he runs an IB Workshop with UGA and hires interns in the winter. Good experience if you can land it.

Very laughable to compare UGA to Emory or Vanderbilt. They're light years away in prestige or placement. A UGA kid going to Citi happens at the rate of an Emory kid going to Centerview, Blackstone or Point72 or some other UMM/MF PE. Emory/Vandy consistently place people every year into Evercore, Moelis, Lazard. Vandy fills BOA and Moelis to the brim. Emory consistently sends multiple kids to Centerview, Lazard, and PWP

IB is a huge uphill battle from southern schools outside of Duke, Emory, Vanderbilt, UT Mccombs, UNC KF, and UVA
