University of South Carolina ( USC, UofSC, Carolina, DMSB, Moore) Insight
First off, I'm not writing this discussion for myself or those already in the industry. I'm writing it for incoming college students struggling with a decision on where to go to college. I struggled with that same decision, and ultimately decided on the University of South Carolina Darla Moore School of Business (DMSB). There's not much information on the school within WSO, so this will be a ton of information about it. Many of those who read this may have different opinions on the school and the strength of its programs, however most people who have discussed the school have no way of actually knowing its strengths.
Consulting: As of recent, the Moore School has become a direct target for consulting firms within the southeast, the most prominent of which is McKinsey's Charlotte and Atlanta offices. They have hosted multiple recruitment sessions with both the Honors College, the Consulting Club, and Business school this year. EY has also begun directly recruiting from South Carolina. If you want a top-tier MBB job, it is entirely possible out of USC. Second tier consulting firms are also now recruiting from Carolina, Including EY and Deloitte.
Investment Banking: Although the Moore school of business is developing into an extremely good business school, (#1 Ranking International Business, #3 Supply Chain) it is still to be considered a Semi-Target for Investment Banking. After spending some time here, I have already seen a handful of seniors I know go into Investment Banking. It's not super common to go to JP Morgan or Goldman from here, however I've already seen a few break in. And yes, JP Morgan & Jefferies have begun directly recruiting from USC.
Programs: The Darla Moore School of Business (DMSB, Moore School) has a ton of different options that lead into top-tier jobs in accounting, finance, and consulting. The Finance Scholars program has recently become a "Underground Pipeline" to NYC IB and Consulting according to Poets & Quants, I'll link the article below. The Accounting Scholars program is not nearly as well known, but it has decent placement in the Big 4. Other than Scholars programs, Darla Moore has numerous clubs and organizations set to help students achieve their desired career, the most notable of which being Gamecock Consulting Club, which won the 2022 Wharton Undergraduate Case Competition against teams from top-tier business schools and Ivy's. Again, the Moore school offers a ton of beneficial organizations, which are extremely helpful in any desired career.
Before you scroll down and attempt to bash the University of South Carolina and the Darla Moore school, actually read what I've written and do your research on it. Sure, you may not see a ton of gamecock alums on the street, however the school is punching way above its weight when it comes to recruiting and placement. Sure, I wouldn't consider it a huge target, but I would say it is becoming similar to IU Kelley School of Business.
