UT Austin vs. Michigan vs. Carnegie Mellon (Undergrad)
I'm interested into going to S&T, more specifically trading, preferably somewhere in NYC, but I wouldn't mind Chicago. Ideally I'd like to be at a BB, but I understand that I'll probably have to start somewhere smaller.
I'm currently accepted as an engineering major at all three schools because I think being a quant would help me more than having a BBA, but I'm considering switching majors.
Basically my question is from a purely career standpoint, which school would give me the best chances to make it in NYC? And if I choose to go to any particular school for monetary/social reasons, would I be significantly disadvantaged?
Knock UT off the list. While they have a strong engineering program and do place students at BBs in NY, you'll have an easier time out of Michigan. Most UT people go to Houston and focus on energy.
Although UT's great for IBD recruiting in NYC and Houston, it isn't really for S&T. Michigan is a bonafide target for most BBs and I think you'd have a better shot going there. I can't comment directly on Carnegie Mellon, but I haven't encountered anyone from there working in finance.
Michigan would be the best choice especially if you would not mind Chicago.
I heard CMU has an amazing Computational Finance program. Worth looking into?
Carnegie Mellon would be most technical and probably best quantitatively, but Michigan would get you there and would be a better party scene. I would go to Michigan and live up the Big Ten party scene.
Are there any opportunities that I wouldn't have at Michigan that I would have at CMU or vice-versa?

CMU is the best for techie stuff like comp sci but the social life would be terrible. A ton of nerdy guys and no girls and its in Pittsburg definite pass. Michigan is probably the best all around. Well respected, you can place in pretty much anything. UT Austin would be the most fun but would limit you a little in terms of placing to banking in NYC. Go with Michigan
Pittsburgh is a lot of fun and you have Pitt if you want to party hard. I'd prefer that to Ann Arbor IMO.
CMU is a great school, but you need to decide what college experience you want. I'd personally go with UTAustin. Better weather, great sports, and placements in Texas. No state income tax and a growing state economy.
