UVA CAS Economics vs. Emory Goizueta BBA

Hello all,

I'm planning to apply for a sophomore freshman transfer to both schools, and I have a guaranteed in-state transfer to the BA Econ program at UVA but not McIntire. On the other hand, I could also go to Emory Goizueta, which is a full-fledged business school.

UVA would cost me just $40K a year whereas Emory is $90K, and idk if the $50K per year differential is worth it just for "business school" status. On the other hand, I'm also worried that as a UVA economics student, I will not have equal recruiting opportunities compared to McIntire.

What do y'all suggest I do? Is getting a BBA vs a BA really worth the ($200K)? This is a major dilemma for me and thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

Cost Consideration:

  • UVA CAS Economics: $40K per year
  • Emory Goizueta BBA: $90K per year
  • Difference: $50K per year, totaling $200K over four years

Recruiting Opportunities:

  • UVA:
    • UVA is highly regarded for its strong recruiting prospects, especially for McIntire students.
    • Even as an Economics major, UVA offers substantial on-campus and off-campus recruiting opportunities.
    • All major consulting firms, banks, and Fortune 500 companies recruit at UVA.
  • Emory Goizueta:
    • Emory's Goizueta Business School is a full-fledged business school with strong recruiting ties.
    • The BBA program is well-respected and offers robust recruiting opportunities.

Key Considerations:

  • Financial Impact:
    • Attending Emory would cost an additional $200K over four years compared to UVA.
    • Consider the long-term financial implications of this debt.
  • Recruiting:
    • While McIntire students at UVA may have a slight edge in recruiting, UVA Economics students still have significant opportunities.
    • Emory Goizueta's BBA program provides a strong business education and excellent recruiting prospects.

Decision Factors:

  • Cost vs. Benefit: Weigh the additional $200K cost of Emory against the potential benefits of a BBA.
  • Recruiting: Consider if the recruiting advantage at Emory justifies the higher cost.
  • Personal Fit: Think about which environment and program align better with your career goals and personal preferences.

Conclusion:

  • If minimizing debt is a priority, UVA offers excellent value with strong recruiting opportunities, even for Economics majors.
  • If you believe the BBA from Emory will significantly enhance your career prospects and you can manage the financial burden, it may be worth considering.

Ultimately, the decision should balance financial considerations, career goals, and personal preferences.

I would choose UVA. Both schools are similar in recruiting (UVA with an edge), but the cost for Emory isn't worth it. I'm pretty sure the three-year program for McIntire just started this year, so I doubt banks would only recruit from McIntire. I believe you can still internally transfer to McIntire after your second year. Even if you can't, you can still take classes from McIntire (e.g., accounting and finance).

That's good, but I also heard that economics students at T25s with business schools (e.g USC NYU Mich) are usually fucked when it comes to recruiting cz all the banks inherently think BBA is harder to get into?
