Vanderbilt vs Georgetown MSB vs UMich Ross vs. NYU Stern
Hi all! I'm a high school senior who just got all college results back, and I'm trying to decide between four options. I figured I'd ask people who are actually in the industry. Not 100% set on finance or consulting, but pretty certain that that's what I'm going for as of right now. Which school (of the 4) should I pick, given that I want to work in consulting / finance?
Vanderbilt would be free (I am a Cornelius Vanderbilt scholarship recipient + I received additional aid). I'm also incredibly lucky because my parents have agreed to gift me the money that they had previously saved up for college when I graduate. It'll be about $120k by the time I graduate.
Georgetown MSB would be about $15k/year.
UMich Ross would be about $35k/year.
NYU Stern would be about $40k/year.
Thank you all!
All of these are fine for both banking and consulting with a little variation (Stern better for banking but worse for consulting, Vandy a hair worse for banking but probably the same for consulting as Ross/Gtown, and then the other two are pretty even). Given that, I would cross off Stern and Ross (unless you're dead set on banking which you appear not to be) given the cost differential to the other two. Between Vandy and Gtown I would just pick based on personal fit. $60k difference sounds like a lot but if you're not taking out debt and you go into one of those two fields it will feel pretty negligible 5 years down the line; I would only weigh the money marginally if you truly can't decide between them.
Somewhat agree with the above poster except that Vandy is a solid tier below your other options, so I wouldn’t consider it. If money isn’t a concern, go to Stern. But if it is a concern, then pick Georgetown as it’s excellent and much cheaper than the rest
Having done MBB hiring (pre-L/S HF) I would say that take seems overly banking-centric. For consulting, Stern UG places unimpressively (MBA is a different story) while Vandy is on the same tier as the other two. I think you're right if OP is only interested in banking (which I admittedly don't know much about), however. Personally would pick Georgetown in this situation, but that's just me.
Don't know that I fully agree with this take. Ross and Georgetown out-place Vandy in finance and consulting. Stern out-places all of them in finance, and while it doesn't really do well with MBB at the undergrad level, it sends a good amount to Tier 2 firms. Also, Ross, Georgetown, and Stern kids work almost exclusively in tier 1 cities, which is far from the case with Vandy kids
