Wharton MBA Reapplication After Acceptance

I was admitted to Wharton for matriculation in August, requested a deferral for a year for what most would consider a good to very good reason, and had my deferral denied. I don't want to go into too much detail on what my reasoning was as it isn't entirely germane but it was more than just "I don't want to do virtual classes". I essentially cannot enroll this year (because of the reason I requested the deferral in the first place) so I am faced with the prospect of reapplying next year. Has anyone had or heard of anyone having experience being accepted to a school, choosing to withdraw their acceptance so they can take care of personal / professional items, then reapplying in the following year? Did they have success?

In years past I would assume this was a pretty rare occurrence but I get the feeling that it may be more common this year given what is going on with COVID and if schools aren't being very flexible with their deferral acceptance standards.

Based on the few conversations that I have had, it is my understanding that if I were to withdraw and reapply AdCom would likely see that as a neutral or positive. I am trying to get some more insight into how much / if my acceptance this year ups my chances for next year or whether I am just jumping back into the pool with the same odds as I had last year. FWIW I felt that I had a strong application last year and, while surprised and excited to have been admitted, I felt that it was deserved and not some stroke of good luck. Apologies for the lack of detail on my case, I am trying not to identify myself too much as well as keep the discussion relevant for others.

If anyone else is facing a similar problem, I would be interested in hearing your experience thus far and any good advice you have been given.

I’m in the exact same boat as you. Denied deferral and I don’t want to deal with the huge cost and opportunity cost of business school for an indisputably poorer experience.

I’m personally leaning towards sucking it up and going. With the economy in shambles (I’m assuming you’re American, don’t know if that’s the right assumption), there are going to be a ton of applicants for the next few years. It’s most likely going to be way harder to gain admission again as everyone floods back to school to sit out a downturn. Just my two cents, no idea if I’m right.
