Which school in Georgetown to transfer into, and is it worth it? (student in UVA)
I'm a UVA pre-comm first year student right now and I'm afraid if I can't make it to McIntire.
Georgetown seems to place marginally better than UVA, and considering placement per capita, I think Georgetown might be better for me if I gotta choose between the two.
The problem is: which school in Georgetown will be better for finance/consulting recruitment? And how will it compare with UVA McIntire/College of Art and Science?
Also, I think both schools requires you to join clubs in order to secure better placements (learning the technicals and networking on your own is certainly doable in both schools but it's certainly better to be in class as it really boost likelihood to be in better banks I assume). Given the competitiveness of joining top clubs are basically the same, if it still true that Georgetown will be better than UVA in terms of placement? And, if possible, can I know how to get into those clubs (heard knowing club executives to be important...maybe I should just stay at UVA and socialize with the core club members...)
How will the worst one in GGT compare with McIntire or UVA college of art and science? Can you guys do a ranking of the five schools lol, really appreciate it.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:
Georgetown vs. UVA Placement: Both schools are strong targets for finance and consulting recruitment, but the differences are nuanced. Georgetown's McDonough School of Business (MSB) and UVA's McIntire School of Commerce are both highly regarded. However, placement differences are marginal, and both schools require significant involvement in clubs to maximize opportunities. Georgetown alumni are known for their strong "Hoya Saxa" pride and willingness to help, while UVA benefits from a large, loyal alumni base with high response rates to cold emails (~70%).
Which Georgetown School for Finance/Consulting?: If you transfer to Georgetown, the MSB (McDonough School of Business) is the better choice for finance/consulting recruitment. It provides more structured support, resources, and access to business-related extracurriculars. While Georgetown's College of Arts and Sciences (Econ major) can also lead to success, MSB offers a more direct path with better access to info sessions, competitions, and networking opportunities.
Club Importance: At both schools, joining top finance/consulting clubs is critical for placement. These clubs provide technical training, networking opportunities, and often have exclusive resume drops with top firms. At Georgetown, clubs like GUSIF (Georgetown University Student Investment Fund) are highly prestigious but extremely competitive (5% acceptance rate). Similarly, UVA's top clubs like McIntire Investment Institute (MII) and Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) are Tier 1 for banking recruiting.
Competitiveness of Clubs: The competitiveness of joining top clubs is similar at both schools. At Georgetown, knowing club executives and networking with current members can improve your chances. At UVA, the same applies—socializing with core club members and demonstrating genuine interest is key.
Rankings of Schools for Finance/Consulting:
Should You Transfer?: If you're confident about getting into McIntire, staying at UVA might be the better choice due to its strong alumni network and club opportunities. However, if you're uncertain about McIntire and prefer a more structured business school experience, transferring to Georgetown MSB could be worth it.
Ultimately, your success will depend on your ability to network, join top clubs, and demonstrate your interest in finance/consulting. Both schools offer excellent opportunities, so focus on where you feel you'll thrive academically and socially.
