Are Finance Certifications Actually Worth It Early in Your Career?
I've been looking into different ways people try to break into finance, and one thing I keep noticing is how much emphasis gets placed on certifications, courses and credentials.
But I'm curious how much they actually matter when you're trying to land your first serious finance role.
For someone targeting areas like financial analysis, corporate finance or investment banking, what would you prioritize first?
- Strong Excel and financial modeling skills
- CFA or another recognized certification
- Internships and practical experience
- Networking
- Building your own valuation/modeling projects
- Something else entirely
My assumption is that practical skills and experience probably beat collecting certificates, but I'd be interested to hear from people who actually work in the industry.
If you were starting again today, what would you spend your first 6–12 months learning?
