Non target => WSO Intern => Major US Bank

Monkeys,

Long story short, I went to a non-target, had a sub-par gpa, and was a liberal arts major – pretty disastrous in trying to land a decent finance job. Prior to graduating, I started reading business/finance resources, studying CFA L1 , and networking immediately. I landed my first gig through a friend which gave me some experience analyzing financial statements and ratios. It was decent, particularly for somebody with my background and the economy, but had zero mobility and no name recognition, so I knew I wanted to make a move.

I joined the WSO internship as I really needed to add value to my resume in any way possible, plus I figured it would be a solid EC since I had planned applying to a FT MSF. Just before submitting my application, I interviewed and landed my current role as a credit risk associate at a major US bank. My WSO internship was pivotal, as it served as a major discussion point throughout my interviews, demonstrating my interest in finance despite a liberal arts background.

I hope my path can encourage those out there who feel the odds are against them to never give up the fight. I had a piss poor background for finance jobs, but somehow managed to land one at a great company. I’m just an average Joe, so I don’t have any earth-shattering wisdom to impart on you all. With that said, I don’t want to write too much as I know everybody’s busy, but I’m happy to answer questions if there are any.

Nice post and congrats. I like the attitude, too.

Who are you and why are you posting on Flake's account.

Congrats td! I have no idea what you did for WSO, but the site's made some major leaps over the past couple years so the effort was appreciated.

Awesome, Thats great to hear. I am in a similar boat as OP and it is inspiring to hear that it is possible. Congrats Man.

I hope this is better than the last batch of shit you gave me. Produced more wood than Ron Jeremy. I don't want you to yell, "Reco!" anymore. Know what you should yell? "Timber!" Yeah, Mr. Fuckin' wood.

Cool story. Thanks for sharing.

Work for WSO for free and get a job. Heard it here first folks.

Congrats OP.

What's your current role at a major US bank?

What kind of internship is WSO?

What's your background? financial or non-financial?

I completed the SEO internship. Andy gives you a lot of latitude with the internship, so you can really use it to focus/research areas that are of interest to you: tech, econ, m&a, regulatory, b-school, whatever. Once you start landing those informational/job interviews, it’s up to you to sell/spin it as you see necessary.
