Advice: BP IST Finance & Risk Summer Internship

I applied for BP's IST Trading Internship Program but ended up being offered an internship within BP's IST Finance & Risk division instead. Since my career goal is to become a Commodity Trader, I am just trying to figure out if this opportunity would take me in the right direction or not.

Finance & Risk is split up into Accounting/Reporting/Control, Operational Excellence, Settlements and Commodity Risk. The last two of these sound like they would actually teach me something useful but the other two I fear are very far away from the actual commodity trading business.

Let's say I apply to full-time Commodity Trading Graduate Programmes next year. Would this internship on my CV be to any help? Maybe most importantly, would gaining knowledge within Finance & Risk for a summer teach me valuable things that would be useful to know as a Commodity Trader?

I would love to hear any advice on whether you think this is a good opportunity or if I might as well pass on it.

Unless you have something else in hand or in queue or know about the commodity markets from a previous experience don't see why you'd reject the offer. Furthermore, if the role allows you to get in touch with the traders you have an opportunity to have an impression on them to refer you for next year when you apply to their graduate program. Connections are very important.

Fair point, I really hope I would work close enough to the Trading business.
